Samuel Jordan Kirkwood

Samuel Jordan Kirkwood (born December 20, 1813 in Harford County , Maryland , † September 1, 1894 in Iowa City , Iowa ) was a politician in the United States . He was the 5th and 9th Governors of Iowa, Senator and Secretary of the Interior of the United States.

Life

Kirkwood was educated in Washington and moved to Mansfield , Ohio in 1835 . He then studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1843 and the county prosecutor two years later. In 1850 he was sent as a delegate to the Ohio Constitutional Assembly, moved to Coralville , Iowa in 1855, and was elected Republican to the State Senate the following year . Kirkwood's political influence began to grow, and he was elected governor of Iowa by his party.

When he left office in 1865, President Abraham Lincoln appointed him envoy to Denmark. However, Kirkwood was tired of public life and declined to continue his legal practice in Iowa. In 1866 he was elected to the United States Senate to replace James Harlan . In 1875 he again received the post of governor of Iowa, and in 1876 he was appointed to the Senate, where he was still a member when President James A. Garfield appointed him Minister of the Interior in 1880 , which he remained until 1885.
