Stanley Knapp Hathaway (born July 19, 1924 in Osceola , Polk County , Nebraska , †  October 4, 2005 in Cheyenne , Wyoming ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ) and governor of the state of Wyoming from 1967 to 1975 . He then became Secretary of the Interior of the United States in 1975 - an office he only held a few months.

Career

After his mother's death, he was adopted by Franklin E. and Velma Hathaway. He graduated from Huntley High School and then went to the University of Wyoming . However, he interrupted his studies there by serving in the United States Army Air Forces during the Second World War . Hathaway received the French Croix de guerre , Presidential Unit Citations and five Air Medals .

After the war, he graduated from the University of Nebraska with a Bachelor of Arts in 1948 and a Bachelor of Laws in 1950 . Then he went to Torrington , Wyoming, where he began practicing as a lawyer. He was elected governor of Wyoming twice, in 1966 and 1970. During his tenure, he served as Chairman of the Western Governors 'Conference from 1970 to 1971 and served on the National Governors' Conference Executive Committee from 1968 to 1969 . President Gerald Ford appointed him to his cabinet as Secretary of the Interior in June 1975 ; however, Hathaway resigned a few months later for health reasons.
