Nels H. Smith

Nels Hansen Smith (born August 27, 1884 in Gayville , South Dakota , † July 5, 1976 in Spearfish , South Dakota) was an American politician ( Republican Party ), who was governor of the state of Wyoming from 1939 to 1943 .

Career

Smith graduated from the University of South Dakota in 1904 with a Bachelor of Arts . He then moved to Wyoming in 1907, where he ranched cattle with his brother. He was a member of the Wyoming Highway Commission and later the State Legislature . During his tenure as governor of Wyoming, he initiated programs that led to the abolition of state property taxes and encouraged the construction of farm-to-market highways. After he was beaten for a second term on his re-election attempt, he returned to his ranch, where he continued to raise cattle.

He was married to Marie Christensen and the couple had two children together.
