Lester C. Hunt
Lester Calloway Hunt (born July 8, 1892 in Isabel , Illinois , † June 19, 1954 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) who served as governor of the state of Wyoming from 1943 to 1949 and that from 1949 represented in the US Senate until 1954 .
Early years and political advancement
Hunt graduated from St. Louis University College of Dentistry and then opened a dental practice in Lander, Wyoming, where he pitchered for the city baseball team during the summer months. He served in the Army Dental Corps for two years, holding the rank of major . After graduating from Northwestern University , he was elected to the Wyoming House of Representatives in 1932 . He then served two terms as Secretary of State .
Governor and US Senator
He was the first democratic governor in the state to hold two consecutive terms. During his tenure, he focused on putting state sovereignty over state control and advocated the establishment of a national park in Jackson Hole . He also secured legislative power to create Wyoming's junior colleges. During his second term, he presided over the National Governors Association , known at the time as the Governors' Conference . Before the end of his term in office, he won a seat in the US Senate in 1948.
Hunt served on the Armed Services Committee and the Kefauver Committee , which investigated organized crime. Although he had announced that he would not seek a second term in the US Senate, he moved his campaign back and committed suicide on June 19, 1954 suicide after Styles Bridges had threatened to make homosexuality Hunts son in public.
