Michael Bradley "Mike" Enzi (born February 1, 1944 in Bremerton , Washington , † July 26, 2021 in Loveland, Colorado ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ). From 1997 to 2021 he represented the state of Wyoming in the United States Senate . He served as chair of the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions and the Committee on Budgets .

Mike Enzi went to school in Thermopolis and Sheridan . He graduated from George Washington University in 1966 and graduated from the University of Denver with an MBA in 1968 . He then began a career as a businessman; he owned a chain of shoe stores.

The former mayor of Gillette (1975-1982) sat from 1987 to 1991 in the Wyoming House of Representatives and from 1991 to 1996 in the State Senate , before he succeeded Alan K. Simpson as a US Senator in 1996 . In 2002 he was confirmed with 73% of the vote, six years later he won even more clearly against the Democrat Chris Rothfuss with 75.6% of the vote . Since taking office, Enzi has been campaigning, albeit unsuccessfully, to ensure that senators can use laptops in plenary sessions.

In the 2020 Senate elections , Enzi decided not to run again. He left the US Senate on January 3, 2021.

Enzi was considered conservative. In a survey of the voting behavior of the senators in 2010 by the political magazine National Journal , he came eleventh from a conservative point of view.

Enzi had a serious bicycle accident near his home, Gillette, Wyoming, on July 23, 2021 and was admitted to the UCHealth Medical Center in Loveland, Colorado, where he succumbed to his injuries three days later.
