Malcolm Wallop (born February 27, 1933 in New York City , New York , † September 14, 2011 in Big Horn , Wyoming ) was an American politician who represented the state of Wyoming in the US Senate .

Life

Malcolm Wallop came to Wyoming at a young age, where he graduated from elementary school in Big Horn County . As a young man he studied at the Cate School in Carpinteria ( California ) and Yale University in New Haven ( Connecticut ). From 1955 to 1957 he served in the United States Army , in which he rose to the rank of first lieutenant .

After working as a farmer and entrepreneur for several years, Wallop decided to get into politics. In 1969 he ran successfully for the Republican Party for a seat in the Wyoming House of Representatives , to which he served two terms in a row. In 1973 he was elected to the Senate of his state, where he served until 1976. In 1974, Wallop sought his party's nomination as a candidate for governor of Wyoming, but was defeated by his Senate colleague Dick Jones . In the actual election, Jones lost to the Democrat Edgar Herschler .

In 1976, Wallop ran successfully against incumbent Gale W. McGee for a seat in the United States Senate. On January 3, 1977, he began his work in Congress in Washington, DC . Malcolm Wallop was a US Senator for three terms. He was Chairman of the United States Senate Committee on Ethics from 1981 to 1983 .

When he was re-elected in 1982, he received 14 percentage points more votes than his Democratic challenger Rodger McDaniel . In 1988, however, it was harder for him when a thin lead of around 1,300 votes secured him victory over challenger John Vinich . In 1995, Wallop withdrew from politics into private life.

Malcolm Wallop has been married four times. He has four children with his first wife, Vail Stebbins, with whom he was married from 1956 to 1965. His second wife was Judith Warren, with whom he was married from 1967 to 1981. His third marriage to French Carter Goodwyn lasted from 1984 to 2001. From 2005 until his death he was married to Isabel Ferguson.
