The LDV Maxus is a pickup truck from the British car manufacturer LDV . It was created in 2000 in cooperation with Daewoo Motors .

history

LDV needed a successor to the Convoy / Pilot series, which was originally built in 1974. Daewoo Motors needed a successor for the Daewoo Lublin and it was decided to develop a joint successor. A total of £ 500,000,000 had already been spent when Daewoo Motors was acquired by General Motors in 2001 . The rights to the Maxus were secured by the LDV Group, which also acquired tools and manufacturing equipment from the Daewoo Motor Polska plant and installed them in its Birmingham plant.

Series production of the Maxus delivery van began at the end of 2004 and from 2005 the vans and minibuses were offered on the British market. In July 2006, the Russian GAZ Group acquired the majority in LDV for $ 40,373,000. GAZ wanted to replace its GAZelle model with the Maxus in the long term . A common successor for these models and the Maxus was planned for the years 2011 to 2012. GAZ invested $ 100,000,000 in its English subsidiary to increase production to 15,000 cars a year. From August 2007 the Maxus should be exported to Russia. The revision and adaptation of the Maxus, which was necessary for the Russian market and especially the Russian roads, was delayed, so that the sale of the Russia models did not begin until March 2008. From May 2008 prefabricated SKD kits of the Maxus were supposed to be put together in Russia, but this was not financially successful.

The 2008 financial crisis and recession drastically reduced demand and at the end of 2008 LDV was forced to stop production. The GAZ Group refused to continue investing in LDV, making filing for bankruptcy in June 2009 inevitable. In September 2009, Shanghai Automotive Industry took over the bankruptcy estate and rights to LDV. The traditional Leyland Motors plant in Birmingham has since been demolished.

Maxus 2004-2008

The Maxus was produced from 2004 with front-wheel drive and a gross vehicle weight of 2.8 to 3.5 tonnes as a panel van / minibus with either a high roof or a chassis for bodies. According to a payload of 917 to 1616 kg, there were two wheelbase variants (3.1 m and 3.85 m) and different heights. The maximum cargo space was 3.36 m long, 1.77 m wide and 1.93 m high. The width of the sliding door made it possible to load a Euro pallet sideways. The standard equipment included ABS with EBD from Bosch , power steering, air conditioning and an audio system with CD player. The Maxus was powered by a 2.5 liter VM Motori diesel engine with 95 or 120 hp, which was also installed in the Chrysler Voyager . In 2005 the Maxus was voted Van of the Year in England. The official export of the Maxus to Turkey, Malaysia, France and Russia and via individual importers to the other EU countries also began.

In 2006 the chassis was reinforced. There was now also a double cab and a minibus. A refrigerator truck, a flatbed with built-in 3-bed cabin and a fully equipped ambulance were also available ex works. The engine was also available with 130 hp. In 2006, 6722 Maxus were sold in England .

At the end of 2007 the Maxus family underwent 56 changes and modernizations; the Maxus was sold 8,620 times in its home country in 2007.

In the last year of production, 2008, over 9,000 Maxus were built, which were sold by 2010.

Production after the end of LDV

The Maxus has been manufactured under license in Malaysia by HICOM Automotive Manufacturers (Malaysia) under the name Weststar LDV since 2007 . Since 2011, the model has also been rolling off the assembly line of the now rights holder SAIC in China . Here it is built under the name Maxus V80 .
