Chrysler Voyager / Grand Voyager
Production period: 1983-2016
Class : Van
Body versions : Station wagon
Successor: Chrysler Pacifica

The Chrysler Voyager or the Chrysler Grand Voyager is a series MPV , also known as a van .

The same car was or is sold by Chrysler under different brand names , initially as Plymouth Voyager (until 2000) and Dodge Caravan , later also as Chrysler Voyager , Chrysler Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country . There were the equipment variants and versions LE, SE, ES, LX and LS.

In Europe, the Voyager had the greatest success on the market between 1991 and 2000. At that time, the van market segment in Europe was relatively new, so there were very few models from other car manufacturers that competed with the Voyager. This vehicle also sold very well in Austria, where it was also produced. The range of van models from many automobile manufacturers has increased while the segment itself has shrunk. As a result, the Chrysler Voyager last offered between 2008 and 2011 was no longer able to match previous registration figures. In November 2011 a new generation was introduced as Lancia Voyager as part of the merger of Chrysler and Lancia in Europe .

The first generation was initially sold in North America as the Plymouth Voyager in the summer of 1984 ; production started on November 2, 1983. At the same time, it was also offered as a Dodge Caravan with slightly modified features . The variant with a longer wheelbase was introduced in the spring of 1987 and was named Plymouth Grand Voyager . The car was optionally available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive (AWD).

Initially, the car was not officially sold on the European market, but a smaller number of gray imports were imported into Europe. Since the beginning of 1988 the model was then officially offered as Chrysler Voyager .

At that time it was in Europe with the exception of the already established Renault Espace and the Mitsubishi Space Wagon , which appeared a year earlier, without competition in this market segment.

The European Voyager is outwardly identical to the Dodge Caravan , it even has the typical Dodge grille . As with the Plymouth Voyager, the long version has the addition of Grand .

The model codes were ES (Voyager / Grand Voyager) for Europe and AS for North America.

Motorization

Different engines were installed. A 3.0-l (from Mitsubishi ), a 2.5-l and later a 3.3-l petrol engine as well as a 3.8-l variant for the AWD version. From the start of production in Austria, a 2.5-liter diesel engine with a maximum output of 85 kW from VM was also installed. The 3.3-l variant was only available in Germany in conjunction with the automatic transmission.

The third generation of the Voyager appeared in the spring of 1995. The engine range was retained in principle, there was also a 2.0-liter gasoline engine with a maximum output of 98 kW (133 hp). The vehicles still had the Dodge grill.

From the 2000 model year, the Chrysler Voyager name was also introduced in North America after the Plymouth brand was discontinued. There was the Chrysler Voyager and the Chrysler Grand Voyager in this model version. The difference between Voyager and Grand Voyager is in size and weight.

The model codes for Europe were GH (Grand Voyager) and GS (Voyager), while North America used the code NS.

safety

This model generation was the 1999 Euro NCAP - Crash Test rated two stars (out of five) for occupant protection. In the frontal crash, Euro NCAP described it as the worst result in its vehicle class at the time. In the event of a side impact, however, Euro NCAP certified that the vehicle had good protection due to the above-average seating position.

In the crash tests previously carried out by the IIHS for vehicles from model year 1996 , it was rated “Marginal” in the “Moderate overlap front” test, in the US NCAP crash test in the frontal test with three stars at the driver's seat and four stars at the front passenger seat.

Model history

In autumn 2000 the fourth version of the MPV appeared. New to the engine range was a diesel engine with common rail injection proper of Bosch , of a DOHC valve control possessed with 16 valves and a power increase to a maximum of 104 kW or 106 kW received. A typical Chrysler grill was installed here for the first time. Model codes for Europe: GK (Grand Voyager right-hand drive) / GY (Grand Voyager left-hand drive) / RG (Voyager general), North America model code: RS

From autumn 2000 to mid-2004 there was also a model in North America called Chrysler Voyager , as the Plymouth brand had been discontinued. It was the short wheelbase version . From summer 2004 it was renamed Chrysler Town and Country , after which the longer version of the car was named.

At the beginning of 2002 the Eurostar plant was taken over by Magna Steyr .

A facelift took place in the summer of 2004. The diesel engine (2.8 l displacement with 110 kW) was only available with an automatic transmission , and the new seating system (Stow 'n Go) was also available, in which the two rear rows of seats were completely lowered to let.

In December 2007, the assembly of the Magna Steyr model in their Graz plant was stopped.

safety

The right-hand drive model received only two stars in the NCAP crash test, one of which was deleted. However, according to the report, the left-hand drive model performed significantly better and would probably have achieved 4 stars. In US NCAP tests by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration , however, the model scored between four and five stars (out of a possible five). In the crash test carried out by the IIHS, the vehicle was rated “Poor” in the “Moderate overlap front” test in model year 2001; after a subsequent improvement in model year 2002, the rating was increased to “Acceptable”.

In North America the car is called Chrysler Town & Country . For the local market (USA / Canada) the type was also manufactured as VW Routan until 2013 . All vehicles are produced in Windsor , Canada .

From November 2011 to 2014 the car was sold in most European markets under the name Lancia Voyager , replacing the Lancia Phedra and the Chrysler Grand Voyager. The commercial vehicle versions were from 2011 to 2015 under the brand Ram trucks as Ram C / V sold.

Production of the Chrysler Town & Country ended on March 29, 2016.

Motorization

A diesel and a gasoline engine were available. The 2.8 l diesel engine has a maximum output of 120 kW, has a maximum torque of 360 Nm, is equipped with a diesel particulate filter as standard and can be combined with all equipment lines. The 3.8-liter V6 gasoline engine has a maximum output of 142 kW and a torque of up to 305 Nm. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard in this model, in Germany the vehicle with a gasoline engine was only offered in the Limited equipment line ( LX and Touring were also available as EU imports ). For the 2011 facelift, the 3.8-liter engine was replaced by a 3.6-liter engine from the Pentastar series.

safety

In the crash tests carried out by the NHTSA , this model achieved five stars in a frontal test in the 2008 model year and an overall rating of four stars in the crash test carried out after the facelift in the 2012 model year.
