The Chrysler PT Cruiser is a car model by the American manufacturer Chrysler , which was built from the beginning of 2000 to the summer of 2010.

Model history

Prior to the production model, several concept vehicles were used to give an outlook on the Chrysler PT Cruiser. The first was the Plymouth Pronto presented at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in 1997 , the second was the Chrysler Pronto Cruizer at the 1998 Geneva Motor Show and the third was roughly at the same time as the production model, the Chrysler Pronto Cruizer AWD NAIAS 1999. The abbreviation PT stands for "Personal Transportation". The vehicle was conceived by the designer Bryan Nesbitt as an interpretation of the Chrysler Airflow with Dodge-Neon elements, but built on its own platform (PT platform).

Even after the presentation of the production model, some concept vehicles based on the Chrysler PT Cruiser were presented, most of which did not go into series production: including the Panel Cruiser and the GT Cruiser (production model: PT Cruiser Turbo) at the NAIAS 2000, the concept vehicle for the convertible variant at the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) 2001 or the Chrysler California Cruiser with a preview during the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance 2002 and a public premiere at the Mondial de l'Automobile 2002.

In spring 2004, the series version of the four-seater Chrysler PT Cruiser Cabriolet with a soft top followed at the NAIAS 2004.

Facelift

In spring 2006, the PT Cruiser received a facelift , which was presented in mid-2005. Mainly the front view was changed with new headlights and the interior with new colors and materials. The engines have also been slightly revised.

production

The car was built at Chrysler's Toluca ( Mexico ) plant from February 2000 to July 9, 2010 . In addition, the units equipped with diesel engines were initially assembled exclusively in the Austrian Eurostar automobile plant from July 2001 to July 2002 . When the Graz location turned out to be too expensive for the PT Cruiser, the Toluca factory took over the assembly of the diesel-powered units.

Production of the convertible began in January 2004 and was discontinued on December 21, 2007.

In the summer of 2009, the sale of the sedan in Germany was officially ended; in 2010 there were a total of 18 new registrations.

technology

The Chrysler PT Cruiser has front-wheel drive and is approved for five people.

In the cabriolet variant, the weight increased by around 68 kg due to the reinforced vehicle structure.

In Euro NCAP - Crash Test Chrysler PT Cruiser reached 3 out of 5 stars in occupant safety and one of five in the pedestrian safety.

The chassis has MacPherson struts at the front and an axle with Watt linkage at the rear .

Type designations

The type designations of the PT Cruiser differ depending on the body shape and the side on which the steering is located. The closed model with left-hand drive is referred to as type FY and with right-hand drive as type FZ. In the case of the convertible, on the other hand, the type designation JY was used for left-hand drive and JZ for right-hand drive.

Awards

The PT Cruiser was listed in the top ten of the Car-and-Driver 10Best Cars list in 2001 and won the North American Car of the Year award in the same year .
