The Chrysler Laser was a front-wheel drive hatchback sports coupe produced by the US automobile manufacturer Chrysler from 1983 to 1986.

The Chrysler Laser was based on the shortened platform of the Chrysler K-Cars ( Dodge Aries or Plymouth Reliant ). It was part of the G24 development project and thus a sister model of the Dodge Daytona . While this remained in production until 1993, the laser was discontinued at the end of the 1986 model year. There was no corresponding Plymouth model.

history

For the 1984 model year, the Chrysler Laser appeared with a modern body with a profile somewhat reminiscent of the Porsche 928 , in the versions Basic (2.2 l four-cylinder) and XE (2.2 l turbo engine). Visually, it differed only slightly from the Daytona, but there was no variant for the laser that corresponded to the Daytona Turbo Z, and the Laser XE had an electronic dashboard.

In 1985 the power of the turbo engine was increased to 148 hp. Small changes concerned the underbody protection and two new paint colors. For an extra charge there was an XT package that included front and side skirts, wide tires, boost pressure indicator and sports suspension.

In the 1986 model year, the XT version was raised to the status of an independent model. A new extra was the T-Roof with removable roof halves made of tinted glass. At the end of the model year, the laser was taken out of the range. The successor can be the Plymouth Laser , an offshoot of the Mitsubishi Eclipse , since all Chrysler dealers in the USA also represented the Plymouth brand.

The Chrysler Laser produced 147,500 copies in three years.

Chrysler acquired the right to use the Laser name from Elite Enterprises .
