The Chrysler 300M is an upper middle class passenger car from the automobile manufacturer Chrysler , which was manufactured from mid-1998 to late summer 2004. This continued the series of "Letter Cars" that had ended in 1965 .

history

Originally the vehicle was planned as an Eagle Vision , because there have already been some advertising photos with Eagle emblems. The formal premiere of the 300M took place at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in 1998. After the Chrysler Group withdrew the Eagle brand from the market in spring 1998, but wanted to keep a more compact and sportier alternative to the large sedans on the LH platform ( Chrysler Concorde and LHS ) in its range, the vehicle was released as Chrysler in May 1998  300M on sale. Unlike the larger LH models, the 300M was also offered in Europe.

On August 26 or 27, 2004, the last 300M rolled off the assembly line in Brampton, Ontario at Chrysler's Bramalea Assembly plant. Its successor is the Chrysler 300 .

Facelift

In addition to small changes to the engine electronics in 1999 and 2001, a 4-way CD changer (6-way from 2003) was installed in the lower compartment of the center console from the 2000 model year onwards. From 2001 side airbags were offered as an option. In the spring of 2002, the 300M received a slight design change, which was evident from the more typical brand radiator grille with the brand emblem of that time placed higher up. From 2002 it was available as the 300M Special.

Media reception

Due to its modern design and good workmanship, the 300M received great praise in the American trade press, Motor Trend magazine crowned it “Car of the Year 1999”, and Car and Driver put the car on their “10Best Cars” list in 1999 and 2000.

drive

In North America as well as in Europe, the 300M was offered with a 3.5-liter V6 engine (engine code EEG) with SOHC valve control, which drives the front wheels and in Europe initially a maximum of 187 kW (254 hp), later 185 kW or 189 kW (252 hp) in North America and developed a maximum torque of 339–346 Nm. In addition, a variant with the 2.7-l V6 engine (engine code EER) with DOHC valve control was also available in Europe from 1998 to 2001 , this initially developed a maximum of 149 kW (203 hp), later 150 kW and initially had a maximum torque of 255 Nm, later of 265 Nm. It was also installed in other vehicles from the Chrysler Group, such as the smaller Chrysler Sebring . A 4- speed automatic transmission A606 / 42LE with Autostick function (similar to Tiptronic ) was installed as the transmission .

Furnishing

The equipment includes an on-board computer, automatic air conditioning, aluminum wheels, cruise control, power windows, seat memory, heated seats (front) and an infinity stereo system with nine speakers. In later model years, a wooden steering wheel, a gear knob with a chrome surface and a different seat seam ("waterfall look") could be ordered as extras.

300M special

In the USA, a special edition of the 300M was also offered from 2002. In addition to more powerful brakes, special rocker panels and 18-inch alloy wheels, the engine received a slight increase in output to a maximum of 190 kW and 350 Nm maximum torque. In addition, the Special had a firmer chassis and a twin-pipe exhaust system for a different sound. In the interior, the wooden strips have been replaced with a carbon look and the 120-mph speedometer standard in the USA models has been replaced by a 150-mph version. In addition, the Special received other indicators, marker lights and xenon headlights.
