The Chrysler Crossfire (internal type designation ZH) was a DaimlerChrysler product that was produced by Karmann as a coupé and a roadster. The models are based on the Mercedes SLK 170 series . In contrast to the SLK, however, the Coupé has a fixed steel roof, the Roadster a fabric roof.

Model history

The Crossfire was manufactured by Karmann in Osnabrück from 2003 to 2007 . It owes its name to the crisscrossing beads (Cross - English "cross") in the sideline. It was named DaimlerChrysler's first jointly designed vehicle by Tom Marinelli, then Marketing Vice President of Chrysler.

The vehicle was preceded by a concept vehicle that was first shown at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in 2001. Production of the coupé series model began on February 3, 2003; Production of the Crossfire Roadster started on February 2, 2004. The series model of the coupé was shown for the first time at the LA Auto Show 2002, the series model of the roadster at the NAIAS 2004.

The more powerful variant SRT6 was presented for the first time at the 2004 Geneva Motor Show.

On December 17, 2007, the last Crossfire was manufactured at Karmann because the sales figures did not meet expectations.

drive

The Crossfire was available in two versions with the same 3.2-liter V6 base engine, the Mercedes M112 : with a naturally aspirated engine with a maximum output of 160 kW (218 hp) and 310 Nm maximum torque, and as the Crossfire  SRT6 with one Supercharged engine with a maximum output of 246 kW (335 PS) and 420 Nm maximum torque. The latter is almost identical to the engine of the SLK 32  AMG , but its maximum output has been reduced by 14 kW (19 hp).

In connection with this, a six-speed manual transmission or an additional five-speed automatic transmission with adaptive shift control was available. The automatic handling is as usual, with an additional manual intervention option via the "Auto-Stick" function by briefly tapping the selector lever, as is the case with the identical machines in the Mercedes C, E and S classes. The SRT6 is only available with an automatic transmission. The drive train transfers the engine power to the rear wheels .

Special models

In order to boost sales, the Black Line special model was introduced at the end of 2004 . This equipment line was available for both the Roadster and the Coupé at a significantly lower purchase price. The Blackline models were only available with manual transmission; they are less well equipped compared to the normal Crossfire. Compared to the standard models, there are no heated exterior mirrors , door sills made of stainless steel with Crossfire lettering, electrostatic air filter, front frame, door handles and side air outlets in satin silver paint, floor mats, HomeLink garage door opener , fold-out cup holder in the center console , Infinity sound system with 240 watts Amplifier and two subwoofers, map pockets and nets between the seats, heated windscreen wiper nozzles, leather sports seats (instead the Blackline has fabric seats from the SLK R170), two-stage seat heating, fog lights and stainless steel sports pedals with rubber studs.

The Silver Line model was also launched at the end of 2004 , exclusively with an automatic transmission. With this equipment variant, there was an interior package with panels made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic ("carbon"), supplemented by a DVD navigation system and a CD changer with MP3 function.
