The Plymouth Reliant was a mid-range front-wheel drive car offered by the US automobile manufacturer Plymouth from 1980 to 1989.

The Reliant debuted in model year 1981 as the successor to the rear-wheel drive Plymouth Volare . It was based on Chrysler's new K platform and was the sister model to Dodge Aries and Chrysler LeBaron .

Compared to the Volare, the Reliant was over 60 cm shorter and 300 to 450 kilograms lighter; but offered no less interior space than its predecessor.

history

For the 1981 model year, Plymouth presented the new Reliant as a coupé, sedan and station wagon in the basic, custom and special edition versions. It differed from the Dodge Aries only in the emblems and a somewhat Mercedes-like radiator grille. Either a built by Chrysler 2.2 liter in-line four cylinder with electronic carburetor and manual four-speed transmission were used (optionally also with automatic) as well as one of as driving Mitsubishi acquired 2,6-liter in-line four-cylinder with balance shafts, which was offered only with automatic transmission.

In 1982 there were no significant changes to the Reliant.

For the 1983 model year, the Custom Sedan and Custom Coupé were no longer available, so that only the Custom Estate was available. The output of the 2.2-liter engine was increased to 95 hp, and if desired, the smaller four-cylinder engine could also be ordered with a five-speed gearbox that was operated via cables.

From model year 1984, Chrysler's corporate emblem, the five-pointed star known as the Pentastar, was emblazoned in the center of the radiator grille . The Mitsubishi engine now developed 102 hp due to modifications to the carburettor.

In 1985 the Reliant was again available in three equipment levels: as a basic version (not as a station wagon), as an SE and LE. At the same time, it experienced a facelift with an inclined, wider radiator grille and enlarged rear lights that were also visible from the side and also enlarged. The 2.2-liter now developed 97 hp.

From model year 1986, the Reliant lettering on the rear was supplemented by a capital K. The four-speed gearbox was no longer available; The basic drive was the now injected 2.2-liter with five-speed gearbox. Mitsubishi's 2.6-liter engine was replaced by an in-house 2.5-liter in-line four-cylinder engine that was only available with an automatic transmission.

In 1987, the SE equipment was discontinued, and for the first time individual seats were standard instead of the front bench, which reduced the number of seats from six to five.

As in the previous year, the Plymouth Horizon , from the 1988 model year, the Reliant was only offered with one equipment, called Reliant America. The number of extras has been reduced, the price from 7655 to 6995 dollars.

In 1989 the station wagon was no longer offered and after that the Aries production was completely stopped in the summer. A total of 1,080,000 copies of the Plymouth Reliant were built.
