The Dodge Ramcharger was a large SUV that Dodge manufactured between 1974 and 1993 model years. It was built on the shortened chassis of the Dodge Ram . There was a Plymouth version called the Plymouth Trail Duster , which was on sale from 1974 to 1981 and was Plymouth's only SUV.

The 1981 Trail Duster was essentially the same as the Dodge Ramcharger; It differed from the other models in that it was the first to have a non-removable tailgate that reached into the roof. The Trail Duster only had this detail in model year 1981; In 1982 it was no longer manufactured.

First series

The Ramcharger was mainly delivered as a two-door model with permanent all-wheel drive; from 1975 there was also a rear-wheel drive variant. Models manufactured between 1974 and 1980 have a removable roof; there were also fabric roofs. In the first year of production, the pillars of the superstructure were connected to the removable roof. The cars were usually powered by a Chrysler LA engine , the most common displacement being 5.2 liters. There was also a 5.9-liter engine, and in the early years even the Chrysler RB 7.2-liter engine.

As a large SUV, the Ramcharger competed with the Chevrolet Blazer and the Ford Bronco . The ramcharger was sometimes also used in rallies. There he had some success, e.g. B. he achieved first place at the Sno * Drift 1975 .

Second series

A second series of the Ramcharger was built in Mexico based on the second series Dodge Ram in 1999, but not for the US market. This model never reached the sales figures of the first series and was discontinued around 2002. An interesting detail of this series was a small folding seat in the hold: it was built in on the side and not as big as the other seats, which made it uncomfortable for long journeys.

The Ramcharger was not sold in the USA because Daimler-Chrysler had two mid-range SUVs in its range, the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Dodge Durango . In the SUV market, 4- and 5-door vehicles were preferred over 2-door versions. GM also discontinued its two-door Tahoe and Yukon models.
