The Dodge Caliber was a compact SUV from Chrysler Corporation sold in Europe between June 2006 and December 2011 . With the exception of the Dodge Viper (partly also Chrysler Viper ) and Dodge Dart in the 1960s (produced by AMAG Schinznach), it was the first Dodge model officially offered in Europe .

The Jeep Compass and the Jeep Patriot are based on the same platform .

Model history

The Caliber, which went on sale in the USA after the Detroit Motor Show in January 2006, was an attempt for the DaimlerChrysler subsidiary at the time to regain a foothold in the compact class . The vehicle was produced in Belvidere ( Illinois ).

The car was offered with four different engines. To the market in May 2006 the start of Caliber was associated with a 2.0-liter CRD diesel engine with 103 kW (140 hp) leistendem pump-motor of VW and three Otto engines with 1.8 (110 kW / 150 PS), 2 , 0 (115 kW / 156 PS) or 2.4 liter displacement (125 kW / 170, which was developed by the Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance (GEMA) ).

The manual transmission of the 2.0 CRD has six gears. The 1.8- and 2.4-liter petrol engines were only available with a manual five-speed gearbox, the 2.0-liter petrol engine is only available with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) until autumn 2009 , which can also be manually switched into six Levels can be switched.

Until the end of 2007, the most expensive model was the Caliber R / T (Road and Track), which was only available with a 2.4-liter engine. While in the USA this variant was optionally available with all-wheel drive and the CVT transmission, in Germany the R / T was only offered with front-wheel drive and the five-speed transmission. From the end of 2008 the R / T was no longer offered in Germany. According to the corporate strategy, the Jeep brand should show its competence in all-wheel drive vehicles in Europe, which is why the Caliber was not offered with all-wheel drive.

In autumn 2007 the Caliber SRT4 ( Street and Racing Technology ) was launched on the US market. This model was powered by the R / T's 2.4 liter engine , which was boosted to 217 kW (295 hp) by turbocharging , as well as a six-speed manual gearbox from Getrag (DMT6) and 19-inch light-alloy wheels with 225 / 45 R19 tires fitted. The SRT4 was only available with front-wheel drive. In Germany, the SRT4 was available from July 2008 to July 2010.

In the summer of 2010, the Caliber 2.0 CRD was replaced by a 2.2 CRD, which had an output of 120 kW (163 hp). According to the factory, the standard consumption is 5.8 liters / 100 km.

The Caliber was available in the equipment variants S, SE, SXT. Depending on the equipment variant, the Caliber offers extras such as an alarm system, cruise control, illuminated cup holders, air conditioning with a coolable glove compartment, a flashlight, etc. as standard.

The Dodge Caliber was available in Europe in the following exterior colors: Inferno Red Metallic , Marine Blue Metallic , Surf Blue Metallic , Steel Blue Metallic , Deep Water Blue Metallic , Sunburst Orange Metallic , Brilliant Black Metallic , Bright Silver Metallic , Stone White , Light Khaki Metallic .

There was a choice of three different wheel / tire combinations: 17 × 6.5-inch steel wheels with 215/60 R17 tires at the front and rear or 18 × 7.0-inch light alloy wheels with 215/55 R18 front and rear. In addition, the base models in North America are fitted with 15-inch steel wheels with 205/70 R15 tires.

Facelift

For the 2010 model year, the Caliber received a redesigned interior in autumn 2009, which is supposed to have a higher quality appearance with chrome accents and darker colors. Externally, the vehicle remained almost unchanged.

The 1.8-l petrol engine was withdrawn from the range. In Europe from the beginning of 2010 only the 2.0-l engine - now also with a five-speed manual gearbox - was available. The Caliber SRT4 was discontinued in mid-2010.

The turning circle was now 10.80 m. The drag coefficient (C w ) was 0.37 for vehicles with a gasoline engine and 0.39 for the diesel model. For the SRT4 it was 0.407.

successor

On December 19, 2011, the last Dodge Caliber - a black model - rolled off the production line in Belvidere.

As a successor, a completely new vehicle called Dodge Dart has been manufactured at the same location since mid-2012 .

Registration numbers

Between 2006 and 2012 6,705 Dodge Calibers were newly registered in the Federal Republic of Germany. 2007 was the most successful sales year with 2,237 units.
