Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance
The Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance (GEMA) was a joint venture between the automobile manufacturers DaimlerChrysler , Hyundai and Mitsubishi Motors . Within DaimlerChrysler, this project was assigned to Chrysler.
The company, which was founded in May 2002, has five manufacturing facilities each for 420,000 engines per year in Dundee ( Michigan , USA) (two plants), Asan and Hwaseong (both South Korea ) and Shiga ( Japan ). Hyundai developed the basic design of the engine, and each individual manufacturer made the adjustments for their own vehicles. Production started on October 5, 2005, the engines had a displacement of 1.8 to 2.4 liters.
In September 2009, Chrysler acquired the factories in Dundee, Michigan, expanded them to also be able to build a modern 1.4-liter engine there, and renamed them Dundee Engine Plant (s) in 2012.
