The OM 611 by Mercedes-Benz is a four cylinder - diesel engine with common-rail direct injection . It was presented in 1997 in the C 220 CDI model. Vehicles with this engine type mostly have "200 CDI" and "220 CDI" in their sales designation.
The article also deals with engines OM 612 and OM 613 with five or six cylinders, also in- line engines that are technically closely related to the OM 611. Vehicles with five cylinders of this engine type mostly have "270 CDI" in their sales designation, with six-cylinder engines mostly "320 CDI".
These engines were used from 1997 to 2005 mainly in the C-Class W202 , the E-Class W210 , as a six-cylinder also in the S-Class W220 , and in vans (" Sprinters ").
technology
General
The Mercedes-Benz OM 611 is a four-cylinder diesel engine with two overhead camshafts that operate the 16 valves via bucket tappets . The OM 611 was first sold in September 1997 in the C-Class under the designation C 220 CDI. Compared to the predecessor model OM 604, the OM 611 has 30% more power, 50% more torque and 10% less consumption. An oxidation catalytic converter is used for exhaust gas cleaning. Since the efficiency of the new generation of engines has been increased, there is not enough heat available for sufficient interior heating when the outside temperature is low. This problem was countered in the CDI series II by installing an electric auxiliary heater and in the CDI series I with a diesel-powered auxiliary heater. The camshaft is driven by a duplex roller chain.
injection
A special feature is the first-time use of common rail direct injection from Bosch in a Mercedes-Benz engine model. The fuel is distributed to the injection nozzles via a common line (common rail) in which the fuel pressure is kept evenly high (up to 1350 bar) by a high-pressure pump. The solenoid valve-controlled injection nozzles inject it into the combustion chamber through six holes. In the pilot injection, a small amount of fuel is introduced into the cylinder before the actual combustion, after which the nozzle closes again until the main injection. As a result, the amount of fuel in the combustion chamber at the time of self-ignition (after ignition delay ) is low, which ensures significantly improved smoothness. In the CDI series II, the injection system was supplemented by a high-pressure control system using a pressure control valve, a quantity control valve, a mechanical fuel feed pump and a fuel temperature sensor.
Charging
The engine is ventilated via a turbocharger with a bypass valve (so-called wastegate ). Since the turbocharger is driven more and more with increasing engine speed due to the higher amount of exhaust gas, the compressor itself pumps more and more air. This in turn leads to an even stronger exhaust gas flow, which in turn drives the turbine even more. In order to avoid damage from mechanical or thermal overloading, the charge must be limited ( boost pressure control ). A bypass valve was used for this in the CDI series I, which is opened at a certain boost pressure and diverts the exhaust gases past the charger into the exhaust tract. A further increase in the turbine speed is thus prevented. In the CDI series II, the turbocharger was replaced by a VNT charger . VNT stands for Variable Nozzle Turbocharger (German: Variable Turbine Geometry Charger) and means that adjustable guide vanes are attached to the exhaust side . It is controlled by means of negative pressure. This technology leads to a faster build-up of the boost pressure in the lower speed range. This is noticeable through better cylinder filling and thus higher torque. A charge air cooler was installed to cool the hot charge air to an optimal temperature .
Intake tract
The EKAS (intake duct shutdown) is used in the intake tract of the OM 611 . One of the two inlet ports per cylinder can be switched off at low engine speeds (tangential port). The sucked in air now flows completely through the specially shaped 2nd channel (swirl channel). The resulting swirl leads to a better mixture formation, whereby a better combustion is achieved. In the CDI series I, the EKAS is pneumatically controlled, while the CDI series II has an electronically controlled and steplessly working EKAS. Another innovation in the CDI series II is the pneumatically controlled exhaust gas recirculation valve . It reduces excess air and lowers temperature peaks by adding exhaust gases to the fresh air that is drawn in. This reduces nitrogen oxide emissions and combustion noises. To regulate the exhaust gas recirculation, a hot-film air mass meter is installed, which enables an exact determination of the intake air mass.
Five-cylinder OM 612 and six-cylinder OM 613
In parallel to the OM 611, the OM 612 (five-cylinder) and OM 613 (six-cylinder) series were developed, which form an engine family with the four-cylinder brother OM 611. These engines have the same cubic capacity per cylinder and are in-line engines. Their pistons, connecting rods, injection nozzles, valves, glow plugs and other components are identical parts, with corresponding advantages in terms of procurement costs and storage. All engines of the OM 612 and OM 613 series are based on the CDI series II.
The OM 612 DE 30 LA is a special feature. This engine is based on the OM 612 DE 27 LA, but AMG increased the stroke in order to achieve a larger displacement. Due to the increased engine power and torque, numerous components had to be redesigned and adapted to the increased load. The crankshaft drive was strengthened, the cylinder head screw connections optimized, an oil pump with a larger delivery capacity was used and reinforced pistons with oil spray cooling were installed in the piston crowns. The glow system has been redesigned and ensures a shorter pre-glow time thanks to the higher glow temperature. The idling behavior could be optimized through improved control of the afterglow behavior.
In order to ensure maximum power and torque output even at high outside temperatures, an unusual design was used for the charge air cooling : the charge air cooler is arranged directly next to the engine and equipped with an air-water heat exchanger. The heat is transferred via a separate low-temperature water circuit to two coolers in the front that are separate from the actual engine cooler.
In contrast to the regular OM 612 engines, the guide vanes of the VNT turbocharger are adjusted by the engine electronics; the adjustment process is therefore faster than with pneumatic control. The exhaust gas recirculation valve was modified and also received an electronic control. Together with the close-coupled thin-walled front wall catalyst it provides for improved emission control. The exhaust system has a pipe diameter of 76 mm and thus contributes to increased performance.
