The OM 604 series is an in- line four-cylinder diesel engine with pre-chamber injection from Mercedes-Benz . It is a further development of the OM 601 and has four valves per cylinder. As with its predecessor, the engine block is made of gray cast iron and the cylinder head is made of light metal .
The use of four-valve technology in a passenger car diesel was a world first at that time. The use of this technology not only enabled increased torque and power output over a significantly expanded engine speed range, but also reduced fuel consumption at full load by up to 8 percent. In addition, particle emissions in the exhaust gas have been reduced by around 30 percent thanks to the optimized combustion process. Further measures for efficient exhaust gas cleaning were exhaust gas recirculation and the standard oxidation catalytic converter .
The OM 604 was first used in 1993 in the C-Class ( 202 series ) and in 1995 in the new E-Class ( 210 series ). These were the only Mercedes diesels to have a distributor injection pump (electronic distributor injection pump, EVE for short ) from Lucas instead of the tried and tested in-line injection pumps from Bosch .
The seals on Lucas injection pumps become brittle and leaky over time. Since the replacement of the entire injection pump is very costly, a repair kit is offered in which the affected seals are replaced.
OM 605 / OM 606
The OM 605 (five-cylinder) and OM 606 (six-cylinder) series were created on the same technical basis . From 1993 OM 605 and OM 606 (E 250 Diesel and E 300 Diesel) were built into the 124 series as naturally aspirated engines , where two-valve engines were also used as turbo engines.
The OM 605 was available in the first C-Class (W202) when the series was introduced in 1993, and from 1995 it was only available as a turbodiesel with the designation C 250 TD. The larger OM 606 six-cylinder turbodiesel could now be ordered in the E-Class (210 series) as the E 300 TD.
From 1997 these engines were also available with an exhaust gas turbocharger in the successor series 210 .
With the exception of the OM 604 D20, which was produced in small numbers for the southern European market, the four-cylinder engine OM 604 had larger values for bore (89 mm) and stroke (86.6 mm) in contrast to the OM 605 and OM 606 , but a smaller total displacement of 2155 cm³.
