Previous model Mercedes-Benz 140 series
successor Mercedes-Benz series 221

The Mercedes-Benz 220 series ( S-Class ) replaced the 140 series and was offered from October 1998 to August 2005.

The S-Class was built as a sedan with two wheelbases. The corresponding coupé is the CL-Class (C 215) . The S-Class was the market leader in the luxury sedan segment for a long time in many countries , but was replaced on the German market by the BMW 7 Series in its final year of production, 2004 . 485,000 W 220 vehicles have been produced since 1998. The S 320 CDI was the best-selling model. The successor model is the 221 series .

Model history

After the forerunner - the 140 series - was criticized for its size and weight, the 220 series was reduced in size, weight and air resistance . The weight of the S 320 , for example, compared to the W140 predecessor with 3.2-liter six-cylinder in-line engine and 170 kW output (W220: 3.2-liter V6 with 165 kW) from 1910 to 1695 kg (total weight ready to drive without Driver, source: ATZ special issue on the W 220). The drag coefficient (C w value) was reduced from 0.31 to 0.27 and the drag index (C w value × frontal area) from 0.745 m 2 to 0.624 m 2 . This resulted in better performance and fuel consumption. Using the S 320 as an example , the top speed increased from 225 km / h to 240 km / h and the acceleration time from 0 km / h to 100 km / h fell from 8.9 s to 8.2 s.

The 220 series was except for the S 600 L and the AMG versions available with air suspension. The S 600 L and the AMG variants, on the other hand, have the Active Body Control suspension, which was available for the other models at an additional cost. The 220 series is thus following the related art Mercedes-Benz C 215 the first car of German production, with an active control of the suspension and was available damping.

Model variants

The 220 series was available with various engines, most of which could be combined with a short or long wheelbase. Only the twelve-cylinder models were only available as a long version. The 5.0-liter V8 engine M 113 in the S 500 model and the V12 M 137 in the S 600 L were available with cylinder deactivation (ZAS) . With cylinder deactivation, four or six cylinders are shut down by valve deactivation in the partial load range. This results in better efficiency and lower consumption due to lower throttle losses and larger cylinder filling. This reduces the S 500's consumption by 0.9 l / 100 km. With the 2002 facelift, the S 600 L received a completely new V12 engine with bi-turbocharging, for which cylinder deactivation was no longer available. This option was also omitted for the S 500 .

In addition to the eight and twelve cylinders, six cylinders were also used in the 220 series . Until 2002, the base model in Europe was the S 320 and in Asia the S 280 . In 2002 the S 320 was replaced by the enlarged 3.7-liter V6 from the ML and offered as the S 350 . The S 320 CDI was also offered consistently, albeit with a slight increase in performance in 2002 . The top-of-the-line diesel model was the S 400 CDI with a 4.0-liter V8, which received a significant increase in performance in 2003.

From 1999 AMG variants were also offered, which differ from the basic models in terms of more powerful engines and body modifications. It all started with the S 55 AMG , which does about the same as the V12, but is much more sporty. A small series of the S 63 AMG L was only offered in 2002, but it was soon replaced by the supercharged V8 in the S 55 AMG , which was now boosted to 368 kW (500 hp) . The most powerful engine in the S 65 AMG L in the last two years of production was a V12 biturbo engine with 450 kW (612 hp).

The respective 4MATIC versions were only built between 2002 and 2005.

  • new front apron and larger grille
  • Clear glass headlights , indicators in the exterior mirror in clear glass and rear lights with four white stripes
  • new alloy wheels
  • Finer materials in the interior as well as new, high-quality designed center console with enlarged monitor (16.5 cm diagonal)
  • modified front seats, optionally as dynamic multi-contour seats (standard for AMG models)
  • Emergency braking assistant Pre-Safe as standard
  • Roll-over sensor (to trigger the head airbag in the event of a rollover) and modified ignition of the passenger airbag
  • improved, fully automatic Active Body Control chassis tuning
  • Optional permanent 4MATIC all - wheel drive for the S 350 , S 430 and S 500 models
  • New or modified engines replace the previous units, with the exception of the S 430 and S 500 .

2003

  • In the S 430 and S 500 , the five-speed automatic transmissions were replaced by seven-speed transmissions.

Engines

 * The engine designation is coded as follows: M = engine, OM = oil engine, series = 3 digits, E = intake manifold injection, KE = port injection, DE = direct injection, ML = compressor, L = charge air cooling, A = exhaust gas turbocharger, red. = reduced performance / displacement, LS = performance increase

Existence in Germany

The inventory of Mercedes-Benz W 220 is listed according to manufacturer (HSN) and type code numbers (TSN) in Germany according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority . Types with less than 100 vehicles are not shown. Until 2007, the inventory included the number of vehicles registered as well as the number of temporary shutdowns. Since 2008, the inventory has only included "flowing traffic" including the seasonal license plates.
