The Unimog 417 is a vehicle from the Unimog series from Mercedes-Benz. The Daimler-Benz AG built it as a successor of various moderate Unimog series from 1988 to 1993 in the Mercedes-Benz plant in Gaggenau . A total of 2285 vehicles in 15 prototypes were built before it was replaced by the Unimog 418 , the last model in the medium series. The 417 is only available with a closed all-steel cab and with two different wheelbases.

The Unimog 417 differs from the lighter Unimog 407 u. a. through the headlights, which are integrated in the bumper of the 417, through greater ground clearance and through more powerful engines.

history

The Unimog, originally only designed as a small implement carrier, was supplemented from the mid-1960s by the medium-sized series, which comprised many similar models. The heavy series and the MB-Trac were added from the mid-1970s . This Unimog program, which was initially very successful, was retained for a long time, but towards the end of the 1980s it became apparent that the expected numbers could no longer be sold. From around 10,000 vehicles per year during the 1970s, sales fell to only half that in the late 1980s, so that Daimler-Benz decided to launch the “Unimog 1988” program to increase sales with a new range of models to increase again. In the course of this new model range, all previous vehicles were gradually discontinued and replaced by the light series 407 , the medium series 417 and the two heavy series 427 and 437 , the MB-Trac was deleted without replacement in November 1991. During this time, the model series were developed at the same time and the Unimog plant in Gaggenau was also modernized in order to optimize the production process and thus save costs.

The first design studies of the Unimog 417 were made in 1986. They came very close to the later production vehicle. Technically, the Unimog 417 is a further development of its predecessor and a fully developed vehicle. In April 1988 the first vehicles of the 417 series rolled off the production line in Gaggenau. First the type 417.100 was built, which was sold as the Unimog U800. Equipped with a four-cylinder OM 314 engine with an output of 75 HP (55 kW), this vehicle was designed for municipal and agricultural operations. Due to the weak engine, however, it was hardly in demand, so that only 68 copies could be sold. The more powerful vehicles of the same series were also put into series production in April 1988, and they sold significantly better. In April 1992 the Unimog 417 was replaced by its successor, the Unimog 418 .
