successor Mercedes-Benz model series 218

The Mercedes-Benz C 219 is a sedan from the Mercedes-Benz brand , which was sold under the sales name CLS . It is based on the E-Class (211 series) platform, but is located in the luxury class below the S and CL-Class. Mercedes-Benz offered the car as a “ four-door coupé ”.

Typical of the C 219 are the low side windows and the headlights, which are different from those of the 211 series. The model was officially presented as the Vision CLS at the 2003 International Motor Show. Due to the high level of interest, the C 219 was already sold from October 2004. Despite the name “four-door coupé” propagated by Daimler AG, the CLS is by definition a sedan (also because of the four doors).

The last C 219 was built on July 26, 2010. Since the market launch in October 2004, over 170,000 vehicles have been produced and delivered.

Furnishing

The C 219 is fitted as standard with a fabric / leather, fine wood trim parts , Alloy wheels equipped and "summer opening" (opening of side windows and sunroof, as well as activation of the driver-seat ventilation via remote control). Various leather types, DVD / TV systems, xenon headlights , adaptive cruise control , air suspension (standard on the eight-cylinder models) and Keyless Go are also optionally available. None of the CLS models are approved for use with a trailer ex works (however, a trailer coupling of the 211 series can be installed and entered in the papers via an individual TÜV approval; the on-board electronics can be activated accordingly for integration).

Sales figures

In 2005, the C 219 was one of the most stable sedans with petrol engines in its segment. The versions from the in-house tuner AMG only play a minor role in terms of the number of units sold.

Facelift

At the beginning of 2008 the C 219 was revised.

Among other things, a new radiator grille, a front apron with a visible diamond grille, LED lights, modified oval tailpipes, new exterior mirrors and new rims were used. The interior got a new steering wheel, the new generation of telematics and a modified instrument cluster. In addition, a new entry-level engine was used, which was located below the 320 CDI. This was the 280 ( M 272 E 30 ) known from other models . It developed 170 kW (231 hp).

Engine variants

The C 219 was initially offered with two engine variants: the CLS 350 and CLS 500. The sports version CLS 55 AMG and later the diesel variant 320 CDI followed shortly afterwards. In the second quarter of 2006, three of the four engines were replaced as part of the minor facelift: While the 320 CDI continued to be built almost unchanged (the maximum torque was increased from 510 to 540 Nm and has since been available from 1600 rpm instead of 1800 rpm) the CLS 350 has direct injection and the CLS 500 (CLS 550 in North America) a larger engine. The AMG model got a new 6.2-liter V8 petrol engine, which, despite the lack of a supercharger, delivers 378 kW (514 hp) more and is even ahead of the BMW M6 (E63 / E64) in terms of performance . From April 2008, the CLS 280 was added to the range, which was the entry-level model with the CLS 320 CDI. From the model update onwards, the CLS 280 could be ordered with an output of 170 kW (231 hp). From April 2009 the CLS 280 was renamed the CLS 300 and the CLS 320 CDI was renamed the CLS 350 CDI.
