Mercedes-Benz R-Class (internal name: 251 series ) is the name of a luxury-class MPV that was built by Daimler between 2005 and 2017 .
It was first presented to the public in 2005 at the New York International Auto Show . A very similar concept vehicle called the Vision GST was presented back in 2002 . Mercedes-Benz itself initially referred to the R-Class as the “Grand Sports Tourer”, or GST for short . In 2007 the name was changed to "SUV Tourer"; At the same time, the 251 series was revised. Deliveries began in autumn 2005 in the USA , the main sales market for the R-Class, and in Europe in 2006.
The R-Class was withdrawn from the US market in mid-2012, and from almost all other markets in mid-October of the same year. In China, the R-Class was offered as a long version until 2018. The vehicles were produced by Mercedes-Benz US International in Vance near Tuscaloosa (Alabama / USA) until the beginning of 2015 . From summer 2015, the R-Class was manufactured at AM General in Mishawaka, Indiana / USA for the Chinese market. Around 200,000 vehicles have been built from 2005 to the present day.
technology
The R-Class was presented in 2005 as a new, separate vehicle category. It shares the technical basis with the M-Class and was offered in a short version (vehicle length 4922 mm) and a long version (5157 mm). The internal type designations are W 251 (short version) and V 251 (long version). The more powerful models of the R-Class were equipped with all-wheel drive as standard and have the additional designation 4Matic, the weaker models were also offered with rear-wheel drive. The R-Class has a tank volume of 80 l as standard.
The R-Class has six (4 + 2) seats. With the rear bench seat folded down, there is a load space of 2001 liters (short version) or 2436 liters (long version). A version with 5 + 2 seats was also available since April 2007 (the sixth and seventh seats are optional extras).
Small facelift (2007-2010)
Just one year after its market launch, the R-Class received a facelift . The “AMG sports package”, which was previously available for an extra charge, has since been part of the standard equipment. Other aprons on the front and rear changed the appearance of the 'R-Class; the fog lights were round now. The 3.0-liter V6 with 170 kW (231 hp) ( R 280 ) came into the model range as a basic petrol engine and the R 280 CDI with 140 kW (190 hp) as the basic diesel engine . The R 500 was, like, revised in all series and makes since 285 kW (388 hp). Since the facelift, more rear-wheel drive variants have been offered.
Major facelift (since 2010)
At the end of March 2010 the first pictures of the major facelift were published; delivery began on September 18, 2010. The bonnet has a stronger arrow and a large grille with three louvres, a wider-looking front bumper with daytime running lights and fog lights, and newly designed headlights. Daytime running lights in LED technology were optionally available together with darkened bi-xenon headlights. The rear lights have been revised and have LED lights. Reflectors have been incorporated into the rear bumper. There is also a diffuser under the bumper in black with integrated and chrome-plated tailpipe trims . The side mirrors were replaced by those of the C-Class. The interior was only slightly revised (a new steering wheel, more equipment colors available).
The R-Class could be ordered with the optional AMG interior sports package. In addition to AMG sports seats in nappa leather, this package includes fully electrically adjustable front seats with multi-contour function, AMG sports steering wheel with shift paddles, floor mats with AMG lettering, sports pedals made of brushed stainless steel with rubber studs and an interior light package. There were two packages for the external appearance of the R-Class: The chrome package contains a large number of chrome applications. The “Exterior Sports Package” contains the chrome package plus 20-inch 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels, blue heat-insulating glass and steel suspension at the front, and air suspension with level control at the rear. The R-Class was available for the first time in autumn 2010 as a 5-, 6- or 7-seater. In addition, the Blind Spot Assist and Neck-Pro comfort headrests were used for the first time. In terms of engines, only the R 350 CDI 4MATIC has been revised. This is where the new OM 642 LS diesel engine came into play: It developed 195 kW (265 hp) and 620 Nm.
Grand Edition special model
From autumn 2009 until the facelift in autumn 2010, Mercedes launched a special model called the Grand Edition . This includes 20-inch, two-tone AMG light-alloy wheels and tinted rear lights. In addition, as in the earlier Avantgarde equipment lines , all windows are tinted blue. Bi-xenon headlights including cornering and cornering lights are standard. Another feature of the Grand Edition is the LED daytime running lights in the front apron, which looks similar to the E- and S-Class . In the interior, the special model can be recognized by special wooden trim parts with chrome applications and an “AMG ergonomic sports steering wheel” with paddles. There is also a pedal set made of brushed stainless steel with rubber studs. The special model could be combined with all engines and wheelbases.
