The Unimog 421 is a vehicle from the Unimog series from Mercedes-Benz. The Daimler-Benz AG built from 1966 to 1989 in the Mercedes-Benz plant in Gaggenau total of 18,995 pieces. The Unimog 421 closed the gap between the Unimog 411 and the Unimog 406 and thus formed the first model in the light series . It was available with a short or long wheelbase and with only one axis as a power car .
The vehicles of the 421 series are visually very similar to those of the 403 and 406 series, but the convertible version looks more compact and narrow. The most important distinguishing feature of the 421 series is the air inlet, which is always on the right-hand side of the bonnet. In terms of design, the Unimog 421 is a mixture of several vehicles: the frame construction of the flat ladder frame was largely adopted from the Unimog 411, and the engine concept of the car engine as well as axles and transmission are derived from the Unimog 411. The appearance is derived from the Unimog 406.
The Unimog 431 is derived from the Unimog 421 and was manufactured in Argentina for the South American market between 1969 and 1971. For this purpose, an open series with 601 vehicles and a closed series with 152 vehicles were produced from parts from Gaggenau and Argentinian production. The output of 44 kW corresponded to that of the U60, but the wheelbase was only 2205 mm.
Engines
The Unimog 421 was equipped with inline four-cylinder pre-chamber engines; if the prototypes are taken into account, a total of four different engines were used. However, the series vehicles only received the types OM 621, OM 615 and OM 616 from the Daimler-Benz passenger car range.
