Atego is the name of a truck series from Mercedes-Benz ( Mercedes-Benz trucks division ) of Daimler AG . Inside Mercedes, the new Atego is also referred to as the LKN series (new light class). The second Atego generation started in 2013.

Premiere 1998

After a total of 14 years of construction, the Atego was introduced in 1998 as the successor to the LK series. First there was the new small truck series with the in-line four-cylinder diesel engine OM 904 LA (4.25 liter displacement ) and the in-line six-cylinder OM 906 LA (6.37 liter displacement), the 90–205 kW (122–279 hp) as well 470–1,100 Nm. Right from the start, Daimler offered the Atego with four different cabs (S, S extended, L (1 bed) and L high roof (2 beds)) as well as various wheelbases between 3,020 mm and 6,260 mm. There were also various types of construction such as dump trucks , flatbed trucks or tractor units . As transmission types ZF S5-42 with 5 gears, G6-60 and G85-6, each with 6 courses, and a 12-speed transmission were G100-12 (6-speed basic transmission with splitting, 1 reverse gear) available. Available tonnages were the following types: Atego 7xx (6.5 t), Atego 8xx (7.49 t), Atego 8xx (8.0 t), Atego 9xx (9.5 t), Atego 10xx (10.5 t ), Atego 12xx (11.99 t), Atego 13xx (13.5 t), Atego 15xx (15 t), whereby instead of the two ×, the engine output in HP is given as a tenth.

First heavy-duty Atego

The heavy Atego

Since there was still no medium-sized series (later the Axor ) between the Actros and Atego in 1998 , the Atego was also available with a higher frame and the larger machines as a "heavy" tractor unit. The Atego 1533 and 1833 were introduced especially for this type in model year 2000. The engine was the OM 926 LA, the displacement of which was increased to 7.2 l by increasing the bore (from 102 to 106 mm) and stroke, and from then on developed 240 kW (326 hp) and 1,300 Nm.

In the 2001 model year, the Mercedes-Benz Axor replaced the heavy Atego series and from then on was included in the range as a medium-heavy series. The engines of the Atego at the premiere in 1998 and the introduction of the "heavy Atego" were in detail:

The 2004 facelift

Atego 1524 as a tanker at Stuttgart Airport

At the Commercial Vehicle IAA 2004, the facelift finally came, in which the indicators were enlarged and the front was more aligned with the new Actros (since March 2003). The engines remained, but they could now be equipped with a new hydraulically operated gearbox called G131-9 (four-speed basic gearbox with split and crawler gear, as well as a reverse gear) or the likewise new G85-6 with Telligent automatic gearshift (one from the Actros technology), which, among other things, also takes over braking and driving assistance control ( ABS , ASR , BAS, etc.) and offers other functions such as roll control. At the end of 2005, the engine range was expanded to include a new inline four-cylinder (data below) which, due to its significantly lower weight compared to the in-line six-cylinder OM 906 LA, is particularly worthwhile in the payload-sensitive 11.99 ton segment. The Atego x17 also increased by 7 HP to now 177 HP (and by 5 Nm to 675 Nm) and became the Atego x18.

In addition, the entire cockpit has been revised, which from then on appears extremely modern and almost like a car and is available in three different versions: as a distribution, long-distance and comfort variant, whereby all vehicles are equipped with the distribution cockpit as standard , but can be equipped with the other two types at an additional cost The distributor cockpit also has a narrow parapet to simplify access to the passenger seat and can be equipped with a center seat if required. The long-distance and comfort variants have a wide parapet with additional shelves, high-quality surfaces (comfort) or many shelves on the engine block (long-distance transport). Another important innovation was the widened beds, which are now sufficiently wide at 64.5 cm (below) and 70 cm (above) and have a heavy-duty slatted frame for additional comfort.

The engines in the Euro IV and V emission levels have the BlueTec - SCR system. In addition, the even stricter EEV emissions standard is offered for all engines over 130 kW, although this is not required by law. Compliance with the Euro VI emissions standard is only provided for in the successor product , the OM934 / 936LA .

Atego Hybrid

The Atego BlueTec Hybrid, the first series-production truck with hybrid drive in Europe, has been delivered to more than 110 customers since its market launch in 2010. Designed primarily for urban or regional distribution transport, the Atego BlueTec Hybrid 1222L is currently (as of 08/2012) the only hybrid truck with European type approval EU 29 in this sector. Depending on the usage profile, an effective reduction in CO 2 as well as economic advantages can be achieved through fuel savings.

Parallel hybrid technology

The Atego BlueTec Hybrid is based on the principle of the parallel hybrid : The four-cylinder diesel engine OM 924 (Euro V EEV, 4.8 l displacement, 160 kW corresponds to 218 hp output at 2200 rpm) is combined with a water-cooled electric motor (peak output 44 kW corresponds to 60 PS) and a lithium-ion battery pack on the vehicle frame. The three-phase permanent magnet motor is placed between the clutch and the automated transmission. This drive configuration enables both engines to drive the truck individually or in combination. If the battery pack is sufficiently charged by braking or coasting, a purely electric start-up is possible - for example in inner-city pedestrian or environmental zones. The diesel engine runs at idle and only switches on completely when the power requirement is higher. Using the standard start / stop function also reduces fuel consumption, emissions and noise.
