The Mercedes-Benz W 189 was the successor of representation sedan 300 c (W 186 / IV) . After Konrad Adenauer , the first German Federal Chancellor , decided to use this vehicle as a company car, the designation "300 Adenauer" (to differentiate it from other Mercedes-Benz 300s) became established. Until the introduction of the W 100 ( Mercedes-Benz 600 ), the 300 was the German state limousine par excellence. Many foreign heads of state also bought the 300, which was the largest series-production vehicle in Germany at the time.

The type 300 d (W 189), which was produced from November 1957, broke with the distinctive rear, rounded side window of the previous “Adenauer” -300 and led the last side window at an angle to the belt line . In this car, the side windows could be completely lowered and the rear corner window could be removed. The lack of lateral pillars gave Germany the new concept of the hardtop sedan , which was also offered in the USA , the largest sales market . Instead of Anglicism , Daimler-Benz repeatedly used the term “ full view body ” in Germany .

As the first passenger car model from Mercedes, the car was equipped with the M 189 engine with intake manifold injection - in contrast to the complex direct injection of the 300 Sc ( W 188 ) and 300 SL ( W 198 - "gullwing"). While the early models appeared somewhat sluggish due to their heavy weight from 1770 to 1940 kg with only 85 kW (115 PS) or 92 kW (125 PS), the 300 d with the 118 kW (160 PS) injection engine was much more agile. Further technical innovations for an extra charge were the power steering , electric windows, orthopedic seats, air conditioning (this was used for the first time in a Mercedes-Benz car in the 300 d and cost 3500 DM) and the first steel sunroof from Webasto . The 300 d was also available as a convertible for a considerable additional price of DM 8,500. The base price was now DM 27,000. Today, this amount corresponds to around EUR 66,000.

Three W 189 lengthened from 5.19 m to 5.64 m were produced as Pullman limousines and Pullman landaulets . The sedan with the registration number S-LR 134 and a landaulet remained in factory ownership as rental vehicles; a landaulet was sent to the Vatican as a " Popemobile " for Pope John XXIII. delivered.
