The Mercedes-Benz M 189 is based on a series of inline six-cylinder petrol engines that Daimler-Benz produced from 1957 to 1967.

The engine not only replaced the predecessor Mercedes-Benz M 186 (the founder of the Daimler-Benz 3-liter machines from the 1950s), but also shaped a large part of the models of the next decade. The M 189 is basically the injection variant of the M 186 and was the longest-produced engine in the family. In the course of its production time it was provided with changes such as B. 1961 with the introduction of a new base alloy made of aluminum instead of cast iron.
