(2006-2010)

The Mercedes-Benz C 216 is a two-door coupé of the luxury class and the third generation of the Mercedes-Benz CL-Class . It replaced the previous Mercedes-Benz C 215 coupé in September 2006 . The C 216 is based on the slightly modified platform of the S-Class sedan of the 221 series . Compared to its predecessor, the body grew in length by 75 to 5065 mm (from summer 2010 to 5095 mm), in width by 14 to 1871 mm and in height by 20 to 1419 mm.

The basic price at the time of the market launch was around € 106,000; for the revision in summer 2010 this was increased to around € 120,000.

Production ended in December 2013, although free orders could still be placed until August 2013. A total of 32,258 vehicles were produced. Around 37 percent were exported to North America.

Engines and technical data

The entry-level model CL 500 was also available with 4MATIC all - wheel drive from April 2006 on request . The all-wheel drive already used in the S-Class (221 series) has an additional weight of 70 kg, but thanks to various measures it achieves the same performance and consumption values as the version with standard drive. In the all-wheel drive versions, for reasons of space, the otherwise standard Active Body Control is replaced by the Airmatic DC air suspension, which is also known from the S-Class .

Like the CL 63 AMG, both drive variants have the 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission as standard. The twelve-cylinder models CL 600 and CL 65 AMG occupy a special position . Due to their high torque, they are only offered with five-speed automatic transmissions.

With the facelift, the CL 500 was replaced by the CL 500 BlueEFFICIENCY, which was again referred to as the CL 500 from May 2013 , with 320 kW (435 hp). In addition, the CL 63 AMG has been revised and now has an output of 400 kW (544 hp); likewise the CL 65 AMG, which now has 463 kW (630 hp).

Furnishing

Interior with optional Designo leather and trim

An infrared night vision assistant is optionally used for the first time . In addition to the bi-xenon headlights , far-reaching infrared headlights illuminate the road. The reflected light and thermal radiation from objects (people, animals, vehicles, etc.) is recorded by a video camera and the image is shown on the liquid crystal display in the instrument cluster . This increases the visual range to 120 m, compared to approx. 60 m with dipped beam. However, the system does not work properly with oncoming vehicles that are equipped with the same system. The standard equipment also includes the following safety functions: Adaptive brake light ( LED ), Pre-Safe with BAS Plus brake assistant, Pre-Safe brake , electromechanical parking brake and, for an extra charge , Distronic Plus, which has been expanded to include a short-range radar . In addition, the automatic emergency call system mbrace , which was taken over from the previous model, has been used on the North American market since November 2009 - as the successor to the replaced Tele-Aid system.

In addition, the control logic of the electronic control and display system COMAND has been completely renewed and is now carried out centrally by a turn-push-slide actuator , similar to the Audi MMI or BMW iDrive . In addition, a mobile phone pre-installation (code 386) with the SIM Access Profile was available from October 2006 . The C 216 series also offers a fully digital and discreetly integrated 5.1 surround sound system. This is made possible by DTCP technology ( Digital Transmission Content Protection ). This digital encryption from Harman Kardon enables copy-protected transmission of the signals via fiber optic cables from the source to the amplifier. This eliminates the need to convert digital signals into analog ones, which means that for the first time modern multi-channel formats of DVD audio and video as well as DTS CDs can be played in the vehicle without loss.

The car is equipped with a variety of technical features. These include as standard:

Facelift

The first pictures of the revised CL were shown on June 1, 2010, and it was first presented to the public at the 2010 Paris Motor Show.

During the facelift , the front and rear aprons were revised. In addition, the grille and headlights were renewed. The exterior mirrors and the tailpipes are more angular than in the S-Class. The bonnet shows more profile thanks to longitudinal beads.

The driver assistance systems have also been optimized. An active bonnet, the pre-safe brake now has a fully automatic emergency braking function until it comes to a standstill, and the night vision assistant has been improved ( person recognition ).

Since the facelift, the adaptive high-beam assistant ( adaptive cut-off line ) from the E-Class has also been providing optimized illumination of the road at night in the CL-Class : the headlight range is always set so that the light cone in front of the bumper of the vehicle ahead or oncoming vehicle ends. If no other road user is detected, the high beam is activated with a smooth transition. Also known from the E-Class is the traffic sign recognition , which recognizes speed limits and shows the driver in a display, the lane change assistant or the lane departure warning, which warns of unintentional departure from the road by means of a steering wheel vibration. In addition, since the facelift, there has been a crosswind assistant that prevents you from getting out of lane in strong crosswinds. This system is only available in conjunction with the Active Body Control chassis.

The standard safety equipment was supplemented by the so-called Attention Assist . The attention assistant monitors a number of parameters such as the driver's steering behavior and warns of impending fatigue.

At the rear, the rear lights received new graphics. The license plate cutout in the trunk lid has also been changed. In addition, the model name was to change from CL to S-Class Coupé , but this plan was discarded for unknown reasons.
