DTS Compressed audio data in a WAV container

The DTS-CD (also DTS Music Disc ) is an audio CD on which up to seven channels in the DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 format with 44.1 kHz sampling rate can be stored. A similar procedure is possible with AC-3 content ( AC-3 CD ).

Coding

To protect any stereo systems, the DTS-CD is encoded with 12 dB reduced dynamics (14-bit amplitude resolution per sample , 1,234 kbit / s data rate), but read with 16-bit (1,411 kbit / s) from conventional CD players. These can usually only decode PCM , so that a DTS-capable AV receiver z. B. must be connected to the player via S / PDIF . Most DTS-enabled DVD players support correct playback by default. Up to 80 minutes of music in 5.1 surround sound can be stored on a CD.

Manufacturing

With the SurCode DVD-DTS encoder up to 6 individual mono - wave files can be encoded into a 5.1 - wave file. The coding in the DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 format is done with the DTS Surround Audio Suite or the DTS-HD Master Audio Suite . They can then be burned as an audio CD just like normal PCM audio files.

distribution

The DTS-CD is almost not sold commercially because DVD-Audio allows you to choose between several audio tracks. The CDs with DTS film sound used in the cinema differ in their structure from DTS CDs (APT-X100 compression).

Playback on computers

Only a few programs can play DTS- Wave files correctly on the computer . As an example, the VLC media player supports most DTS files. Another option is direct output, e.g. B. via S / PDIF or HDMI to an external decoder (AV receiver).

advantages

  • In contrast to other surround sound formats, such as the Super Audio CD or DVD-Audio , which require separate players, the DTS-CD is compatible with most CD players and only requires a CD player with digital output and a DTS decoder, the is already integrated in most home theater systems these days .
  • Compared to multi-channel sound, which is matrix-coded in stereo sound and decoded with a matrix decoder (such as Dolby Pro Logic , DTS NEO: 6 ), the DTS-CD does not compromise on quality in terms of surround sound.
  • DTS-CDs conform to the Red Book , so they can be handled as "normal" audio CDs.
  • Qualitatively superior to the AC-3 CD thanks to the higher data rate.

disadvantage

  • When the DTS-CD is played in normal CD players , only a noise can be heard. In individual cases, loudspeakers can be damaged at high volume.
  • Not all music systems with a DTS decoder support correct playback, especially with car radios with DVD playback support, problems can arise.
  • DTS encoder programs are expensive to purchase, so making your own is more difficult than with AC-3 CDs.
  • Crossfading , dithering and equalizing the DTS raw data is only possible after decoding, which leads to a loss of quality.
