SIM access profiles

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The SIM Access Profile ( SAP , unofficially rSAP for English. Remote ) is a Bluetooth -Datenübertragungsprotokoll that especially in mobile phones will be used. This makes it possible for a mobile phone installed in a motor vehicle to establish a connection with the SIM card of a Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone using Bluetooth . The mobile phone is then in so-called standby mode, which only puts minimal load on the mobile phone's battery . From this point on, the access data on the SIM card (in principle the network access authorization in accordance with the respective mobile phone contract) are used by the car phone with its own GSM transmitter and receiver unit. Telephone calls and messages are routed via the vehicle antenna of the car telephone.

Advantages and technology

Compared to a conventional hands-free system in the car, SAP has the advantage that the vehicle transmission system is much more powerful than that of the telephone and therefore offers better reception and greater reliability. SAP is also advantageous compared to a mobile phone permanently installed in the car, because then no second SIM card is required. The voice quality is also increased when using SAP, since the possible sources of error or interference for the mobile part inside the vehicle are eliminated.

The SIM access profile should not be confused with the so-called hands-free profile , which is built into the vast majority of hands-free systems , such as all Bluetooth hands-free systems from BMW and most from Audi (see below). When making calls with Bluetooth, the antenna of the mobile phone is used, which is to be assessed as unfavorable with regard to the reception properties. BMW and Audi therefore offer so-called snap-in adapters for common cell phones , which connect the phone to the vehicle antenna and also charge the battery . However, SAP is indispensable for infrared-reflecting vehicle windows, since in this case no radio waves can penetrate the windows.

With SAP, it is primarily a question of network operator access data on the SIM card being used by another phone, in this case the car phone, in order to log into the cellular network. However, the Bluetooth specification allows any APDU to be transferred from the SIM, meaning that address and telephone data can easily be read from the car phone and displayed on a screen. Since the SIM access profile only relates to the SIM card, due to the architecture, only those address book entries can be transferred that are also stored on the SIM card and not in the memory of the mobile phone. However, modern SAP units can access the contacts of the mobile radio device via the separate Bluetooth profile PBAP and thus offer transparent use of both address books.

Another common but unofficial term for SIM access profiles is rSAP (Remote SIM Access Profile). There is also a distinction between client and server , whereby the mobile phone with the SIM card usually acts as the SIM access server and the vehicle's hands-free system represents the client. A big advantage of SAP compared to a simple hands-free device ( HFP ) is the significantly longer talk or operating times, as the battery is much less stressed by the deactivated mobile radio transmitter unit.

It is technically interesting that the SIM interface, which is normally located directly in the mobile phone and only carries a low voltage of 1.8 V with currents of a few µA, can be virtually extended to a distance of up to 100 m with the help of the SAP via Bluetooth can (depending on the Bluetooth range). This fact also makes the SAP interesting for all applications whose hardware, for reasons of space, cannot be placed where the SIM card slot (accessible to the user) is located.

criticism

In addition to the advantages, SAP technology also has disadvantages. The mobile phone itself is no longer logged into the network , which means that all forms of communication on the mobile phone are deactivated. For example, this means that incoming text messages are stored in the vehicle's memory instead of in the mobile phone. These can be read there, but have to be transferred manually to the mobile phone if they are to be read there too. Likewise, smartphones with a navigation app, for example, cannot reload map data or traffic jam information via the mobile Internet while the device is linked to the vehicle via SAP. However, modern SAP units can provide other devices in the car, such as laptops, with an Internet connection via Bluetooth or WLAN.

In the current generation of VW vehicles (e.g. Tiguan), the problem of a lack of internet connection can be avoided by logging the mobile phone into the on-board WLAN in addition to the existing SAP connection. This means that not only the telephone part is made available via the vehicle, but also access to the mobile Internet. This means that other devices in the car, such as laptops, can again be provided with an Internet connection.

Furthermore, unlike a normal hands-free system, it is not possible to simply switch to a private mode in which the conversation can be continued on the mobile phone; this must / can be done by the car phone. An undesirable effect can also occur when staying outside the vehicle: Assuming that the SAP unit has control of the mobile phone and calls can only be noticed or accepted in the vehicle. If the mobile phone user is outside the vehicle and others are taking a call in the vehicle, there is a general risk of misuse in this case . This problem also exists with a simple hands-free system, however, since not all cell phones indicate the use of such a system.

Modern hands-free systems show that the synchronization of the address book also works with them . The real advantage of SAP is the better reception and transmission performance due to the external antenna, the resulting low radiation exposure ( SAR value) in the car and the longer battery life of the mobile phone due to the deactivation of its transmitter and receiver unit.

Mobile phones with SAP support

A large number of cell phones offer support for SAP. However, with the increasing number of smartphones, operating systems that do not offer a SIM access profile have become popular. Almost all cell phones that are based on an unmodified Android , iOS , Maemo , MeeGo or Windows Phone 7 do not yet support a SIM access profile.

Some Samsung models of the Galaxy series are an exception to this. Like most Nokia mobile phones, these offer full SAP support (also access to the phone book itself). Since Android does not officially support SAP yet, this implementation suggests an in-house development by Samsung.

With the Android operating system, many users have expressed their wish for SAP, but the developers have not yet intended this request for a specific implementation.

With some Android devices from Samsung and HTC, the functionality of SAP can be upgraded with an app. To do this, however, the smartphone must offer root access, which can be set up using special unofficial installation files.
