particularities

The Samsung Galaxy S I9000 ( Samsung Galaxy S or SGS for short ) is a smartphone from the South Korean company Samsung and the successor to the Samsung Galaxy I7500 . It has been available on the German market since the beginning of July 2010.

technology

Like the Samsung Wave S8500 , the Galaxy S has a capacitive “ Super AMOLEDtouch screen with a resolution of 480 × 800 pixels ( WVGA standard) and supports WLAN according to the IEEE 802.11n standard and Bluetooth version 3.0. The built-in camera, without LED flash, has a resolution of 5 megapixels and can record videos with a resolution of 1280 × 720 pixels. Moreover, the smartphone has a 1  GHz - Cortex-A8 -Hummingbird processor and 512  MB RAM -Speicher and an A-GPS receiver. The technical equipment of the Galaxy S is very similar to the Apple iPhone 4 , whose processor is also built by Samsung and is based on its A4. With the PowerVR SGX540, a more powerful 3D chip is built into the Galaxy S than in the iPhone 4 (SGX535 +), which is why the Samsung Galaxy S is seen as a direct competitor. The Galaxy S i9000 is one of the few Android smartphones that supports the Bluetooth profile rSAP (remote Sim Access Profile) .

With the Samsung Galaxy S II , Samsung presented the successor to the Galaxy S at the GSMA Mobile World Congress on February 14, 2011.

Operating system / firmware

The Samsung Galaxy S I9000 runs on the Android operating system . Version 2.1 "Eclair" was delivered at the start of sales, followed by version 2.2 "Froyo" in November 2010; an update to this version for existing customers has been possible since November 5, 2010 using Samsung's own " Kies " program . Version 2.2.1 was released a short time later. Android 2.3.3 "Gingerbread" (Germany) has been available since June 11, 2011, and Version 2.3.6 "Gingerbread" has been available via the Kies software since September 2012.

In addition to these official, delivered by Samsung and supported operating systems, there are also a number of other aftermarket - firmware versions ( CyanogenMod , AOKP or MIUI ) that can be loaded on utilities such as "ClockworkMod" or "Odin". In terms of functionality and speed, they are superior to the original firmware.

Android is also offered in version 4.4 for smartphones by developers of various alternative firmware. The similarity of the SoC to the Google Nexus S makes firmware development easier, which means that there are relatively many stable versions, such as CyanogenMod 7 (Android 2.3) to CyanogenMod 11 (Android 4.4.4) for all variants. There is also a beta version of the Cyanogenmod 12 (Android 5.1) for the Plus and higher variants.

The Brazilian developer Humberos has been offering an alpha version of Lollipop for the Galaxy S GT-I9000 since March 13, 2015. This is based on OmniROM with Lollipop 5.1.x and Linux 3.0.x and feels very fast thanks to the new Java runtime environment ART (instead of Dalvik).

variants

After presenting the successors S II and S III , Samsung released several revised versions of the Galaxy S that were developed for special customer groups. This includes three devices in particular:

Galaxy S Plus

An improved version of the Galaxy S is available with the suffix “Plus” (GT I9001). It has a faster processor (1.4 GHz), twice as fast HSDPA, a more powerful battery and comes with Android 2.3.3 from the start. Despite the similar name, it differs considerably internally from the Galaxy S. The chipset is more compatible with the HTC Desire HD .

Galaxy S Advance

The Galaxy S Advance has been available since February 2012 ; In addition to a dual-core processor clocked at 1 GHz, it also offers a photo light and optionally supports NFC . Android 4.1.2 “Jelly Bean” has been available for this model since April 2013.

Galaxy S DUOS

In August 2012, the Galaxy S DUOS (GT-S7562) was presented, which can accommodate two SIM cards at the same time. Instead of the AMOLED screen, a TFT with the same resolution (800 x 480) is installed, and the device also has a weaker battery. Although two SIMs are permanently activated, this newer model variant achieves up to 570 hours of standby in 2G operation despite the smaller battery.

Galaxy S DUOS 2

In December 2013, the Galaxy S DUOS 2 (GT-S7582) came onto the market as the successor to the Galaxy S DUOS . The processor is the dual-core Broadcom BCM21664T CPU with 1.2 GHz. In return, the RAM shrank to 758 MB and the internal memory to 4 GB.

successes

In January 2011, Stiftung Warentest named the Samsung Galaxy S the test winner in comparison with 16 other smartphones with the final grade of “good (2.0)”. At the same time it became known that the smartphone had already been sold over 10 million times worldwide by this time. In June 2012 there were 24 million. The Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000 won a prize at the European Imaging and Sound Association (2010–2011). In the test issue 01/2012, however, the Galaxy S Plus only received a "satisfactory (2.8)" rating (14th out of 20).
