The Samsung Galaxy S6 is a smartphone that was first presented by the South Korean electronics company Samsung Electronics on March 1, 2015 in the run-up to the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona at the same time as the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge . The larger version called Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge + was presented together with the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 on August 13, 2015 in New York . The Samsung Galaxy S6 is the successor to the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the predecessor of the Samsung Galaxy S7 from the Samsung Galaxy product range . The official sales start of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge in Germany was on April 10, 2015, and that of the S6 Edge + on August 21, 2015.

As with every smartphone in the Samsung Galaxy series, the Samsung Galaxy S6 also runs on Google's Android operating system : The last Android version released by Samsung for the Samsung Galaxy S6 was 7.0 "Nougat" .

technology

Processor & memory

The Galaxy S6 has an Exynos 7420 processor with eight cores, which Samsung itself produced using a 14 nm process. The octa-core processor clocks with 4 × 2.1  GHz and 4 × 1.5 GHz. The RAM of the type LPDDR4 comprises 3 GB (S6 and S6 Edge) or 4 GB (S6 Edge +). The internal flash memory is 32, 64 or 128 GB, depending on your choice and, for the first time in the entire Samsung Galaxy S range, cannot be expanded with microSD memory cards.

Functionality

Unlike all older smartphones in the S and Note series, the microUSB port on the S6 is not MHL microHDMI-capable. The Galaxy S6 has an NFC chip with which mobile payment via Samsung Pay is possible. When the smartphone is “ rooted ”, ie when all read and write rights are activated on the device, a circuit in the device is irrevocably changed using the eFUSE process, thereby denying access to Samsung Pay. It is also the first smartphone model series from Samsung that has the Qi standard for wireless charging already built in. The Powermat charging standard is also supported.

camera

Like its predecessor , the Galaxy S6 is equipped with a 16 megapixel main camera with a focal length of 28 mm. The camera aperture is f / 1.9 compared to the Galaxy S5 and the Note 4 with f / 2.2. In addition, slow motion according to the official standards and with up to 120 still images per second are HD 720p - resolution with sound and images in 4K possible. With the S6, slow-motion videos are recorded for the first time in a Samsung mobile phone with an audio track and saved in real time. Videos in full HD resolution ( 1080p ) can be filmed with either 30 or 60 frames per second, but in the latter case no photos can be taken while the video is being recorded. The automatic HDR function should provide more image details . The camera can be started directly by pressing the home button twice, regardless of whether the device is in use or in standby mode, provided it is switched on. In the previous models, this action led to the S-Voice .

In contrast to all previous Galaxy devices (smartphones and tablets), the current file size is no longer displayed by the Galaxy S6 during a video recording with the camera. This is a feature of the new " TouchWiz NatureUX 5.0" user interface .

After installing Android 5.1, the Galaxy S6 can also take RAW photos and the exposure time can be set manually. Lower ISO light sensitivities of ISO 50 are now also supported, while previously the lowest possible light sensitivity supported by the camera software was ISO 100.

It is possible to take series pictures with up to thirty photos in a row.

Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, and S6 Edge + use camera sensors from different manufacturers. Sony's IMX240 and ISOCELL-S5K2P2 image sensors from Samsung's own production are used.

Fingerprint scanner

The Galaxy S6 has a fingerprint sensor that, unlike its predecessor S5, works by placing a finger on it. This allows purchases in the Samsung “Galaxy Apps” app store to be confirmed.

Charging and battery

The Galaxy S6 is charged via a micro USB cable or by means of electromagnetic induction via the WPC's Qi standard . Earlier models from the Samsung Galaxy S3 could be retrofitted with this standard.

Charging through a USB cable with a Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 -supporting charger enables fast charging of up to 15 watts with the screen off. When the screen is switched on, the charging power is halved.

The S6, S6 Edge, and S6 Edge + now support both the international standard of the Wireless Power Consortium for wireless charging and the standard of the Power Matters Alliance for the first time ex works. Compared to its predecessor, which had a USB 3.0 socket, charging and data transfer is only possible via a USB 2.0 cable. At the same time and similar to the previous model series, the matching Qi charger EP-PN920 from Samsung is available, which for the first time transmits a higher output than the previous 5 watts. Current induction chargers with the Qi standard transmit up to 15 watts.

The battery capacity has shrunk from 2800 mAh of the previous model to 2550 mAh. This value is even 50 mAh below that of the Galaxy S4 . The battery is permanently installed in the S6, S6 Edge and S6 Edge + and, unlike all older devices from the Galaxy Note and S series, can no longer be easily replaced.

design

In contrast to the polycarbonate housing of its predecessors, the S6 uses a combination of aluminum (frame) and glass ( Gorilla Glass 4 on the front and back) for the first time. The memory cannot be expanded using a microSD card and the battery cannot be replaced. With dimensions of 143.4 mm × 70.5 mm × 6.8 mm, it is smaller than its predecessor and, at 138 grams, 7 grams lighter. Compared to the IP67 certified Galaxy S5, the device is neither waterproof nor dustproof.

Security updates

In April 2018, Samsung discontinued support for the model, meaning that users will no longer be provided with any security updates three years after the market launch .

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge + only differ from the Galaxy S6 in a few technical details and in design. They have a slightly larger battery (S6 Edge 2600 mAh and S6 Edge + 3000 mAh compared to 2550 mAh in the normal S6) and at 132 g and 153 g, respectively, differ  slightly from the 138 g of the S6. The biggest difference to the standard model is the curved edges on both long sides of the screen. For example, notifications and direct access for contacts can be displayed on these. Since the firmware update "Build OH2", apps can also be placed in the sidebar and thus accessed more quickly. Such a rounded edge was already used on the Galaxy Note Edge , but only on the right side there. The display of the S6 Edge + is also larger than that of the other two models (5.7 instead of 5.1 inches ). However, the resolution of 1440 × 2560 pixels remains the same, reducing the pixel density from 577 to 518 pixels per square inch. It also contains an additional gigabyte (GB) of RAM , which means it now has 4 GB instead of a total of 3.

Sales figures

In the first month of sales, 6 million units of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge were sold, with Samsung shipping 10 million units.
