3GSM World Congress (now MWC Barcelona) - Barcelona (2006)

The MWC Barcelona is one since 1987 (except 2020) held annually fair for the mobile . With over 100,000 visitors and over 2,000 exhibitors, it is the largest in Europe . The organizer is the GSM Association . The fair attracts particular public attention through the presentation of new smartphones or other technical innovations.

history

The fair took place for the first time in 1987, the year the GSM Association was founded, in London under the name GSM World Congress. In 1995 Madrid was the venue.

From 1996 to 2005 the fair was held on a site on the Côte d'Azur in Cannes . In 2006, due to capacity problems in Cannes and the planned renovation of the central congress building there, the exhibition was moved to Spain to the approximately twice as large exhibition center on Montjuïc in Barcelona with better transport infrastructure.

From 2001 to 2007 the fair was known as the 3GSM World Congress. The organizers decided to rename from 2008 in order to optimally take into account the current developments in the field with the name.

In the first half of 2011, negotiations were in progress about the location of the fair from 2013. The choices were Barcelona , Milan , Paris and Munich . In July 2011 the organizers decided to stick to Barcelona as the venue for another five years. In July 2015 it was announced that the MWC would remain at the Barcelona site until at least 2023.

In 2020, the fair was canceled for the first time since it was founded. After more and more exhibitors had declared that they would stay away from the fair in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic since the beginning of 2020, the organizer officially canceled the fair on February 12, 2020.
