Hallo Magenta (also Magenta Speaker ) is a wireless, intelligent , internet-based loudspeaker ( Smart Speaker ) from Deutsche Telekom , which was created in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology in Oldenburg (Oldb) and the French telecommunications company Orange and will be launched in September 2019 Is commercially available. It is the first smart speaker from Germany , which means that stricter data and privacy protection laws under German and European law must be complied with. As personal assistant Hello Magenta has besides the namesake Magenta in addition the wizard Alexa from Amazon.com integrated; a cooperation with Google Assistant from Google Inc. and Cortana from Microsoft , which was initially announced in March 2018, will not take place at the start of sales.

history

The Magenta Speaker was developed in Oldenburg by the local Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology. The device was developed in cooperation with the French telecommunications company Orange, which publishes the French-language smart speaker "Djingo" at the same time as Hallo Magenta. A total of 150 developers from both companies were involved.

First reports about the Magenta Speaker were published in November 2017. In February 2018 it was presented at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona . The test phase was originally supposed to end in summer 2018; the release of the product was planned for summer 2018. In August 2018, Telekom announced that the test phase would begin later than initially announced with 1000 people in spring 2019. A second beta test ran in mid-2019. Sales started on September 6, 2019 at the opening of the 2019 International Consumer Electronics Fair . The product will be available at a reduced price for the market launch, starting October 31, it will cost EUR 149.99 or be available for monthly rent of EUR 4.94.

The Smart Speaker Mini will be in the test phase from June 2020 . This should represent a smaller and cheaper model of the Hallo Magenta.

Functions

The device is designed in such a way that in standby mode it initially processes the user's voice input internally. It is only activated when the device hears the activation word ("wake-up word"). The actual voice control is initiated using the spoken activation words “Hello Magenta”, “Hey Magenta” or “Hi, Magenta”. The device then digitally transmits the words spoken in the room via the Internet to the manufacturer, where an attempt is made to implement the commands. The device is locally connected to the Internet via a WLAN network. An LED signal on the upper edge gives visual feedback. The device is set via a mobile app , available for Android and iOS . There is also a button to switch off the listening function completely. Magenta's voice is the female voice of a real person, from which the sound of the device's voice was generated.

The Smart Speaker is to be used to operate Deutsche Telekom's services such as EntertainTV by voice. In addition, the device can be used to make calls over the landline network without an additional device using the DECT standard, which was a unique selling point at the time of the announcement, but until the device was released, Amazon Alexa was also able to demonstrate this function in Germany.

The virtual personal assistant Magenta should also include basic functions such as calculator, news, calendar, shopping lists, reminders, alarm clock, timer, radio and weather announcements. Functions that Magenta does not include can optionally be carried out by the other integrated wizards if necessary. "Hello Magenta" is used as the wake-up word for the magenta assistant, the other integrated assistants can be activated with their respective wake-up words. An open platform is also to be integrated based on the example of the competition so that other partners can expand the functions of the smart speaker. WetterOnline , Radioplayer , Tagesschau , Spotify , TorAlarm and Rewe have been announced as partners and provide their services via the device. Wikipedia is given as the source of the knowledge questions that Hallo Magenta can answer .

A language platform was announced in collaboration with the French company Orange, with which the services of the Magenta speaker can be offered across Europe.

You do not need a Telekom contract or subscription to use it.
