MagentaTV

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

MagentaTV (formerly Telekom Entertain TV , T-Home Entertain and until October 2018 Entertain TV ) is the product name for triple play - bundled offerings of Deutsche Telekom , consisting of DSL connection with high data transfer rates , fixed line , IPTV and Internet radio from the offer of Phonostar . IPTV and video-on-demand are optionally available via a commercial platform from Microsoft , for which a special set-top box is required.

Telekom Deutschland offers currently marketed

Telekom is currently offering two complete IPTV connection packages ( EntertainTV and EntertainTV Plus ) with three different data rates each via Deutsche Telekom's (V) DSL network and its FTTH extension . The three data rates are based on (V) DSL technology (VDSL2 with 50 Mbit / s and VDSL2 with 100 Mbit / s, ADSL2 + with 16 Mbit / s) and three on FTTH technology ( Fiber 50 TV with 50 Mbit / s, Fiber 100 TV with 100 Mbit / s and Fiber 200 TV with 200 Mbit / s). Entertain Sat is an exception, as this is offered via satellite instead of (V) DSL / FTTH technology. If you want to do without the Microsoft platform with private television , "Vario" packages are offered. Until CeBIT 2008, customers could choose between the regular “Telekom Entertain Comfort” and “Telekom Entertain Comfort Plus” packages. In addition to so-called free TV channels from the standard package, which is also subject to a fee, the “Plus” packages also included additional pay TV channels and a printed TV magazine by subscription.

With CeBIT 2008 the packages were bundled again. In addition to the previous "Telekom Entertain Comfort" and "Telekom Entertain Plus" packages, the new version "Telekom Entertain Premium" can now also be ordered. It contains the features of the previous Plus package without additional pay TV channels and printed program guides and, in contrast to the normal Comfort package, offers, among other things, lower minute prices and an extended e-mail package. All Entertain packages contain an online programming option for the media receiver. Telekom has announced the availability of a new 3D program for August 2011, under which reports and concerts, for example, will be broadcast.

Technology and connection

All customers who have booked a Telekom Entertain package will be switched to the new gigabit concentrator network. Either this is given from the outset, for example with new Entertain connections and basically with outdoor VDSL2 DSLAMs, or it happens through a physical change in the main distributor with indoor cabling. The reason is that the concentrators have to be able to set the necessary routes for the IPTV transmitted in multicast and this was obviously not wanted / could not be integrated into the existing concentrator infrastructure. The authentication of the connection is still established via the RADIUS server from Telekom Deutschland, but a PPPoE connection to other Internet service or collocation providers , including the Telekom resellers, is no longer possible because the gigabit concentrators do not offer / master L2TP . In addition, all traffic over the DSL route is provided with a VLAN tag (see below).

The attenuation limits customary for other DSL connections are not used to calculate the availability of Entertain connections; a separate database is used. This applies not only to the outdoor VDSL2 connections in particular or the indoor VDSL2 variant, but also especially to the ADSL2 + "16k +" connections. These are calculated differently than "normal" ADSL2 + 16,000 connections, which can result in significant and not always negotiable differences in availability. On the other hand, expanded and available VDSL2 areas cannot be marketed in some cases because the corresponding new attenuation values are not yet available for all connection lines and therefore no commissioning is possible.

Terminals

Network termination

As with non-Entertain DSL connections, the DSL splitter connected to the connecting line represents the DSL network termination for both ADSL2 + and VDSL2. The splitters supplied for VDSL2 connections have slightly lower self-attenuation, but they also work all other connections and with ADSL2 +. For universal (ISDN) customers, the NTBA represents the narrowband network termination.

In April 2008 Telekom Deutschland changed the name of the connection type from analog ( POTS ) to standard and from ISDN to universal in order to anticipate a future migration to NGN connections. Currently (June 2009) the majority of customers still get a normal POTS or ISDN connection, but more and more VoIP- based connections are being switched. The customer receives an IAD to which previous analog and (depending on the model) ISDN terminal devices can be connected. For ISDN, however, the internal S 0 interface is only emulated by the IAD with a limited range of functions and therefore does not provide all the extended features of an ISDN convenience connection, such as fax, data transmission and D-channel signaling. Universal connections are therefore only switched via VoIP as part of a pilot project (as of June 2009) and a real ISDN connection is usually provided.

ISDN and POTS

Nothing will change for customers with a real POTS or ISDN connection. The IADs supplied by Telekom Deutschland all contain an analog telephone system with VoIP-to-POTS emulator for three end devices, the Speedport W 900V and W 920V also for ISDN connections and an additional built-in DECT station based on AVM for up to five handsets. For new Entertain connections or the change from an existing DSL connection to a triple play, only an Entertain IP connection can be booked. It is not possible to continue using the existing ISDN or analog connection. As a result, only current Telekom routers can be used (Speedport W504V, W723V, W724V and W921V with internal S0 bus).

ADSL2 + (DSL 16+)

The Speedport multifunction devices available separately from the Entertain package (rent or purchase) contain an integrated ADSL2 + modem. When using an external ADSL2 + -capable modem in connection with a PPPoE-capable DSL router or computer, it must be ensured that the modem does not manipulate the VLAN tagging of the Ethernet frames. However, this is often the case and may lead to the loss of the VLAN tagging (VLAN 8) and thus to Entertain malfunctions.

VDSL2

Fritz! Box 7390 as an alternative device for Telekom Entertain

To use the VDSL2 products, a VDSL2-capable end-user modem is required, either as a single device or integrated in an IAD. At the moment (as of January 2015) Telekom Deutschland delivers the multifunctional device Speedport W 724V or Speedport Smart in the VDSL2 Entertain packages upon request. The previously available VDSL2 modem Speedport 300HS and its successor Speedport 221 are no longer available. All routers currently offered by Telekom are VDSL-capable with the exception of the Speedport Entry.

Router

In contrast to all other Internet access offered by Telekom Deutschland for private customers, the connection is established on the WAN side using VLAN tags. The resulting increase in packet size by 4 bytes requires either a specially configured Fast Ethernet or a Gigabit Ethernet port on the router .

Currently (as of June 2009) there are two different implementations of the Telekom Entertain network that require different router configurations. The IADs offered by Telekom Deutschland, both with and without an integrated VDSL2 modem, are automatically configured via TR-069 to the variant available at the respective connection.

Starting network

VDSL2 data packet in the start network

The VDSL2 access network architecture , which has been available to end customers since September 2006 and is the only one until the end of 2007, is known as the start network . The Ethernet packets of the PPPoE connection established on the DSL line are assigned the VLAN ID 7. Normal Internet traffic, the VoIP connections to Telekom Entertain's own SIP servers, and the unicast and multicast data from IPTV are routed to this connection. Currently (as of June 2009), the PPPoE connection is forcibly disconnected by the Access Concentrator (AC) at least every 24 hours , with subsequent re-establishment of the connection without waiting, but with a different IPv4 address.

Target network

Multicast data packet in the target network

The target network architecture has been used piecemeal since the beginning of 2008 and serves to separate the multicast IPTV traffic, which previously had to be routed by the ACs into the regular Internet traffic and which therefore placed a heavy load on it as the number of customers increased. In addition to the PPPoE connection with ID 7, a second logical connection with VLAN ID 8 is established on the DSL line, which is used exclusively for multicast IPTV traffic. The configuration is done by DHCPv4 and in contrast to the PPPoE connection (which has a forced disconnection every 180 days with VoIP-based tariffs) there is no forced disconnection and the IPv4 address and routes are retained, with this information the connection can therefore also be set up completely statically .

Both connections can be configured, established and terminated independently of each other, even at separate times. The migration of all connections to the target network has now been completed.

With Telekom's BNG migration (since 2015, so far (as of November 2016) only for (V) DSL connections), a configuration comparable to the start network is used again; all traffic (Internet traffic, VoIP connections and IPTV) overflows the PPPoE connection (VLAN ID 7), VLAN ID 8 is not applicable. The PPPoE connection is forced to be disconnected every 180 days.

Media receiver

Media Receiver 303 A
Media Receiver 400

In order to use the IPTV offer from Telekom Entertain, multicast and IGMP packets must be forwarded from the WAN side of the router to the LAN or to the port dedicated for the media receiver. The latter variant is also used with the IADs sold by Telekom Deutschland and prevents broadcast flooding of the LAN if a non-multicast-capable switch is used. In addition, a DHCPv4 server in the LAN is required for the Media Receiver from Telekom Deutschland. If a transparent HTTP proxy is used in the LAN, it must be excluded from handling the media receiver's requests.

In the start network architecture, both unicast and multicast IPTV data are routed via the PPPoE connection; in the target network, multicasts run over the second VLAN route, but unicasts continue to run over PPPoE. This must be taken into account when configuring the IGMP proxy and the firewall, as the media receiver and any software clients need access to both.

The public television channels are transmitted unencrypted via the DVB-IPI standard and can be viewed and recorded with any receiver and any software that supports DVB-IPTV ( e.g. Xine or VideoLAN ).

Other channels, as well as the TV and film archive, are only available via encrypted DVB-IPI ( DRM ), a proprietary Microsoft technology. The set-top box required for this is available from Telekom Deutschland in the form of media receivers (all Kiss / Cisco - OEM ) based on the "Microsoft IPTV Edition" operating system (since April 26, 2011 " Microsoft Mediaroom 2.0") posed.

  • "T-Home MR303" or "T-Home MR500" for Entertain SAT (500 GB)
  • "T-Home MR102" (for other TV sets, without hard disk but with recording function via the existing media receiver with hard disk)

In addition to reception, the devices also offer parallel recording and timeshift functions (number depends on the speed of the downstream) as well as access to the online video archive of individual channels (depending on the Telekom Entertain tariff selected).

Telekom allows a set-top box with a hard drive to be operated. If one or more additional set-top boxes (with or without a hard disk) are connected, the timeshift and recording functions are implemented via the primary set-top box or its hard disk.

The set-top box is dependent on a permanent Entertain-Multicast connection in the target network due to the requirements of Telekom Deutschland. For all the features that go beyond the multicast IPTV decoding, such as channel change , the start of the box or the return from standby mode , the call additional film information and the configuration of the box, and generally is in the starting grid and for the video archive additional unicast access to the IPTV server and the NTP server from Telekom Deutschland is required. If there is no connection or if it is not configured correctly, the set-top box is not available. This applies to all functions, including the use of the recordings stored locally on the hard drive.

In addition to digital television, Telekom Entertain has also been offering a large number of digital radio stations since December 2008.

The HDMI -1.1 output of the Media Receiver used to client version 1.6 for the brightness values of an extended range of 0-255 and not the actually prescribed by HDMI 1.1 standard range 16-235. With TV sets without support for the extended area, this led to different problems with the display of dark and light parts of the picture, for more details see Compatibility Problems of DVI-PC or DVI-Video . The problem has been resolved with client version 2.0.

The media receivers support Dolby Digital 5.1 sound via an optical , a coaxial output and the HDMI interface. They also have up to two USB ports, which, however, are deactivated on the software side and are therefore not available for active use. Telekom does not give a date for activating the connections.

The media receivers with hard disk do not have a standby mode according to Regulation (EC) No. 1275/2008 . The power consumption in what the manufacturer calls “active standby mode” is specified as 12 watts for the “MR301 Type A” model. The devices can be completely disconnected from the power supply using the power switch . Recordings are then no longer possible; a restart of the devices takes between one (device without hard disk) and three minutes (hard disk receiver).

distribution

At the end of 2011, Entertain was used by 1.6 million customers, this was announced at the annual press conference on February 23, 2012, of which around 100,000 customers opted for the new Entertain Sat combined product. The technical range is estimated at around 15 million households (ADSL2 + and VDSL2).

Telekom has been collecting usage data on viewers' television behavior since July 16, 2012. This usage data includes information about the Entertain functions. These are in detail: number of connections from set-top boxes to the Entertain platform, number of active set-top boxes, duration of use, number of switching processes per channel and number of active customers. Telekom uses the opt-out principle. It does not ask customers whether they consent to the collection of data, but only does not log those who expressly object to the collection. Consumer advocates criticize this approach and recommend consumers to object to the data collection retrospectively.

variants

For the IFA 2011 in September 2011, Telekom launched Entertain Sat . Here, the digital TV program is about the Astra - Satellite broadcast, while the control over the DSL line is done.

In July 2012, Telekom also announced that it would be presenting a mobile version of the offer under the name Entertain to go at IFA 2012 . First of all, television content is to be transported to smartphones and tablets via a WLAN connection . After negotiations with the rights holders, it should be possible in a second expansion stage to receive television via UMTS and LTE connections . At Cebit 2013 Telekom announced that it would postpone the introduction of Entertain to go indefinitely. It is now possible to use Entertain to go for a surcharge.
