Speed port
Speedport is the name for DSL accessory products from Deutsche Telekom (formerly T-Home or T-Com). These are DSL modems , DSL routers with and without WLAN , WLAN USB sticks and a few other products such as network cards or WLAN bridges . All devices are OEM products that are produced by other manufacturers for Deutsche Telekom.
Models
The basic functions of the device can be derived from the model name (special cases: Speedport Entry (2), Speedport Neo, Speedport Hybrid and Speedport Smart), e.g. B. "W" stands for WLAN and "V" for voice, which means that at least one telephone can be connected to the landline or with the models W 503V, W 504V, W 700V, W 701V, W 721V, W 722V, W 723V, W 724V, W 920V, W 921V, W 922V and W 925V to make calls over the DSL line VoIP or to operate the Speedport as a telephone system. The model numbers 1xx are router accessories such as B. WLAN receivers, 2xx are modems, 3xx to 9xx are, in ascending order, simple routers to all-in-one devices with a wide range of functions. The Speedport series 9xx also enables ISDN telephones or ISDN telecommunications systems to be connected. From the W 724V, ISDN telephones can also be operated on the Speedport models without an internal S0 bus; the Speedport ISDN adapter is used for this . The second digit stands for the supported line type: x0x for ADSL models, x2x for ADSL / VDSL models (exception due to the "pioneering status" 300HS). The last digit indicates the generation (higher equals younger).
All Speedport modems and routers (all routers listed here have a built-in modem) can handle the ADSL2 + standard (500 and 501 only after a firmware update). Unless otherwise specified, all VoIP-capable routers can also be used as a telephone system on the universal connection (ISDN). For this purpose, the telephone signal from the NTBA is forwarded to the telephony socket of the router. With the exception of the Speedport Neo, all Speedport routers have 1 to 3 separately configurable ports for connecting analog telephones, which can then be used to make calls via VoIP, ISDN or analog lines - simple functions of a classic telephone system such as call lists or internal calls can be made with most of them Devices are used. The W 722V, W 723V and W 921V models enable alternative Internet access via a cellular network using a UMTS stick that can be connected to the USB port. The Speedport Hybrid bundles DSL and LTE access and therefore contains both a VDSL and an LTE modem. The Speedport W 921V (as a WAN router with deactivation of the internal modem) and the Speedport models W 724V and W 922V as well as for use on FTTH access from Telekom ("Fiber") are designed for up to 200 Mbit / s up to 1000 Mbit / s the Speedport models Smart and W 925V (these have a separate, blue-colored WAN port).

T-VoIP: Only those Speedport devices marked with “yes” have an operating license for operation on an IP-based connection from Telekom, since only then is an emergency number dialed via VoIP. Technically, this applies to all connections based purely on IP from every provider. Other, usually older devices have a forced fallback to the landline networkfor emergency numbers, which in this case no longer exists.
(*) Current firmware is required.
Annex J: Only the marked "yes" with Speedport devices can without a splitter at a Annex-J operate port Telekom.

Speedport HSPA and Speedport LTE
For the market launch of the double-play offer Call & Surf via radio using the new LTE cellular standard in 2011, Deutsche Telekom launched the Speedport LTE , a b / g WLAN router with 4 LAN ports and a SIM card slot for dialing into the LTE network with a maximum downstream of 50 Mbit / s. This is the B390s-2 model from the Chinese manufacturer Huawei, branded for Telekom, but optically identical. This router is identical z. B. also used at O2 and Vodafone (model B1000). The Speedbox LTE is optically identical to the Speedport LTE, but has additional features. LTE downstream up to 100 Mbit / s is supported and the WLAN module also supports IEEE802.11 n (300 Mbit / s). In addition, all LTE frequencies (800,1800,2600) and UMTS and GSM are supported, so that a fallback is also possible. This is the B593 model from Huawei, which is also sold by Vodafone under the name B2000. For areas without LTE and ADSL coverage, there is the Speedport HSPA (Huawei B970b) model, which uses the UMTS network. In mid-December 2012, Speedport HSPA and Speedport LTE were replaced by the new Speedport LTE II , which handles both HSPA and LTE.
Speedphone
Under the name Speedphone , Telekom sells DECT telephones for operation on the Speedport models with a built-in DECT base station.
Some models are also available in the versions "with base" and "with base and answering machine". These models also have their own DECT base station (with answering machine) for connection to the analog telephone connection or to routers or telephone systems without an integrated DECT base station.

Trivia
- Speedport is the summary and continuation of the older Teledat series (router without WLAN, DSL and analog modems) and Sinus 154, 111, 130 (WLAN router and receiver).
- In terms of design and functionality, the Speedport W 500 is the only one in the old Sinus design.
- By mid-2008, all products were labeled with T-Com , all subsequent products with the T-Home from the Entertain area . Some devices were in the portfolio after the brand change, which is why there are the Speedport 200, W 502V, W 700V, W 701V and W 900V with the logos T-Com and T-Home . The router web interface was given more recent firmware versions with a new, black T-Home design.
- The models W 700V and W 701V existed in parallel, without any notable differences in functionality and equipment. For Telekom, this had reasons for corporate policy in order not to be dependent on a single manufacturer for these volume models.
- For the same reason, current “sister models” may be differentiated according to type (type A / B), but have the same model name. Not all types are always available in free trade. So existed e.g. B. the W 502V Type B only as a pre-production model.
- The W 720V is a specialty: While the W 721V, which was available at the same time, was largely identical to the W 700V / W 701V, the W 720V was considerably larger, was the only speed port router with three analog ports and was only produced in small numbers.
- The manufacturer can easily be identified using the serial numbers:
- Arcadyan: pure number format, 6 or 7 digits - 123456 or 1234567
- AVM: same scheme as with the FRITZ! Boxes - X245.105.00.252.487
- Hitachi: A number 6 or 7 followed by a letter (mostly J) or just the letter and additional numbers - 6J123456 or J1442344
- Only the Eumex 300 IP and the Eumex 800 V offer three or more analog ports, but due to their range of functions and product placement, they are considered telephone systems (both are not T-VoIP-capable) with an integrated ADSL modem and LAN router functions.
- Only the models W 503V, W 504V, W 7xxV, W 9xxV, NEO, Smart, Hybrid and Entry 2 can be used with Telekom Entertain . In the models W 700V, W 701V and W 900V, the media receiver was temporarily only operational on LAN ports 3 and 4, as initially only these supported the QoS required for the multicast TV stream . However, this restriction has been eliminated with the latest firmware. These three models can also be operated on a VDSL connection if the Speedport 300 HS expansion modem is connected to their LAN 1 port and the internal modem is switched off using a mechanical switch on the router on the rear or underside.
- Since the OEM manufacturers not only supply Telekom, there are various identical versions of the Speedport models. So z. As the at Lidl offered Targa WR500 VoIP (Speedport W 500V), the Siemens Gigaset Optical LAN Adapter Duo (Speedport OptoLAN Pack) or the Siemens Gigaset WLAN Repeater 108 (Speedport W 100 XR), and (with other housing) SMC Wireless Ethernet Bridge SMCWEBT-G (Speedport W 100 XR).
Telekom's market strategies
For some years now, the Speedport models have no longer been given subsidized by Telekom to customers, but sold or rented. The rental prices have been increased from EUR 1.49 per month in 2008 to EUR 4.95 to EUR 9.95 per month in 2016 (depending on the model). B. results in up to 360 euros compared to a purchase price of 400 euros. The rental model is advertised with long-term support and exchange compared to the two-year purchase guarantee. Since the switch from analog or ISDN landline connections to IP, the connection of Speedport models has been recommended to Telekom customers. The main reason given is compatibility with telephony on the IP-based connection. Models from other manufacturers can also be used, but Telekom does not guarantee functionality and compatibility. Limited support (initial setup and basic functions) is provided for the Fritzbox 7490 and 7590, which are also sold by Telekom.
Emergency calls
Emergency calls (110, 112) are automatically forwarded over the fixed network to the old Telekom models on the analog telephone connection. At Telekom's IP telephony connections (VoIP), connections to the emergency numbers 110 and 112 are possible from the subscriber's individual Internet access. The emergency call center can determine information on the caller's location based on the caller's number transmitted. Corresponding connections are possible when dialing in with your own access data from other Telekom connections, but the emergency call center cannot then determine the location of the caller.
Modifications to AVM products
All speed ports manufactured by AVM are derivatives of the Fritzbox models 7170, 7270 and 7390 with added or removed functions. Therefore, with some models, with the help of speed2fritz or freetz, a Fritz! Box firmware can be installed in place of the original T-Home / T-Com firmware. The Speedport W 920V is a special feature. As this is almost identical to the FRITZ! Box Fon WLAN 7570 vDSL except for the housing, the original AVM firmware can be uploaded via FTP. There is currently a German version or an international version of the 7570 firmware that can be easily flashed. When flashing with a 7570 firmware, apart from the Telekom-specific function "Easy Support", with which Telekom customer service can access the router, read it out or update the software, no performance features are lost. Instead, numerous convenience functions are added that can only be found with a real FRITZ! Box, e.g. B. internal fax reception, support for SIP telephones and compatibility with standards outside Germany.
Modifications to speed ports that are not AVM OEM products
For Speedport W 500V and Targa WR500 VoIP there is a free, alternative firmware with an extended range of functions (including SSH and VPN support, Linux-based) as a SourceForge project called bitswitcher . A version of the OpenWRT project is also available.
Vulnerabilities
On April 25, 2012, security holes in the Arcadyan speed ports became known. These allowed intruders to break into the WLAN with little effort thanks to the WPS function. In May 2012, Deutsche Telekom published new firmware for all affected routers that fixed the problem.
On November 27, 2016 was carried out by a Mirai - botnet a worldwide attack on a vulnerability of routers , where some manufacturers TR-064 commands on port 7547 of the TR-069 enabled protocol. As a result, about 900,000 Speedport routers from Taiwanese manufacturer Arcadyan failed, which were not susceptible to the vulnerability, but were brought down to crash . As a first measure, Telekom blocked the affected port and the next day installed a firmware update that eliminated the cause of the crash.
Power consumption
As the data rate increases, so has the power consumption of the WLAN router and is in the range of 10 watts of permanent power consumption. Some models such as the Speedport W 504V have a timer with which the WLAN part can be switched off when it is not needed - for example at night.
Newer models from Speedport Smart or W925V therefore have an optional power-saving function that reduces the LED displays to a single light after 5 minutes in normal operation without affecting functionality. This function can be activated / deactivated via the configuration menu.
