Personal Computer Memory Card International Association
The Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) , founded in 1990, was an association of IT manufacturers; its members included Dell , Hewlett-Packard , IBM , Intel , Lexar Media , Microsoft , SCM Microsystems and Texas Instruments .
It was the namesake of a standard for expansion cards for mobile computers . These cards are known as PCMCIA cards or PC cards .
The PCMCIA dissolved in 2009/2010. The specifications have been adopted by the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF).
Surname
The PCMCIA standard is often cited as an example of off-putting, not self-explanatory names in computers. Andrew Grove (formerly CEO of Intel ) once said: “ P eople C an't M emorize C omputer I ndustry A cronyms” (for example: Nobody can remember the acronyms of the computer industry ); this quote found its place in the vocabulary of computer specialists.
