Fallback level

Fallback (English fallback level ) is a term used in safety technology and reliability theory, often in the rail sector and in the information security is used. The term is also used in automotive engineering, for example in the design of braking systems or steering.

A fallback level represents a secondary system, the at failure of a primary system, a protection against a threat provides or prevents the catastrophic failure of the entire system, often while maintaining a reduced operation quality. A term used in the same way is the so-called limp-home state, i.e. a state that makes it possible to "limp" home.
