The Lech-Stahlwerke GmbH operate the only steel plant in Bavaria . The steel mill is located in the Herbertshofen district of the Meitingen market near Augsburg .
history
Lech-Stahlwerke was founded in 1970 by the Italian entrepreneur Luigi Giussani as Bayerische Elektrostahlwerke as a manufacturer of reinforcing steel and is now part of the Max-Aicher Group . Lech steel works employ around 800 people and produce around 1.2 million tons of steel per year.
The steelworks uses electric arc furnaces to produce billets from scrap using continuous casting systems and uses them to roll steel bars and semi-finished products as well as reinforcing steel.
In recent years, the Lech steelworks have repeatedly come into conflict with residents and their citizens' initiatives regarding the noise and dust nuisance caused by the steelworks.
Furthermore, the disposal of the furnace slag produced as a by-product is criticized. This was used for the construction of a section of the B 2 road . There was a possible danger that heavy metals could be washed out. Melting down the slag represents a new disposal option.
The steelworks is connected to the Augsburg – Nördlingen railway line via a short branch line.
