Videoload is a video-on-demand service from Telekom Deutschland GmbH, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom AG . Videoload enables users to purchase current films and series over the Internet and watch them on PCs, smart TVs or via the media receivers (set-top boxes) from the Entertain, EntertainTV and MagentaTV television packages from Telekom.

history

On November 5, 2003, T-Online integrated a chargeable video-on-demand service into its broadband portal T-Online Vision . The start was preceded by the conclusion of contracts with the studios Dreamworks , Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Universal as well as the German Constantin Film AG. Further partnerships were subsequently concluded with 20th Century Fox , Discovery Channel , Paramount Pictures , Warner Bros. and Buena Vista .

At the end of 2004 a new design and a search function were added to the portal. In March 2005, support for mobile devices was added. In addition, a cooperation for the integration of series titles with ProSiebenSat.1 Media was announced this month . However, this ended after only one year and led to the establishment of maxdome in 2006.

From September 2006, content was also offered in HD , including feature films and series titles. At the start, around 30 offers were available for which a higher price was charged from the start. In 2007, the so-called download-to-own option and the download-to-burn option were introduced in June 2007, allowing customers of other DSL providers to use part of the service for the first time .

On October 18, 2007 the name Videoload was introduced as a brand for the video-on-demand offer. As a result, the service was integrated into the already existing load family for music (including Musicload ). On March 4th, the portal was opened for the entire German market. In March 2009, Telekom founded Videoload free as an advertising-financed offshoot that offers some films and series in low quality and without the possibility of full-screen viewing. This portal has since been discontinued.

Since April 2013, Videoload has had a new design and a new logo.

technology

The service is limited to Germany. Users from abroad cannot access the content, they can only play it back if it has been downloaded in Germany beforehand (for example from www.videoload.de on a notebook). Furthermore, the offer was for a long time reserved exclusively for Telekom customers who had a Telekom DSL connection . Since the service was renamed and opened, everyone in Germany can use the Videoload service.

Initially, the content could only be accessed via the computer. At CeBIT 2004, a set-top box was also presented for the first time in cooperation with Fujitsu Siemens , which, however, was not suitable for the mass market due to the price of 999 euros . This goal was to be achieved with other partners such as Humax or Samsung , whose recipients initially cost only half as much at 499 euros.

Videoload uses an HTML5 player that supports various DRM systems (Widevine, Microsoft Playready). This means that it can be used directly in any modern browser.

Videoload has been offering full HD (1080p) content since December 2013.

Since November 2016, content has been offered in Ultra HD 4K (UHD). These can be played on Smart TVs.

As of June 2017, Videoload can now be used not only on PCs and Macs via www.videoload.de, but also on certain TVs from Samsung, LG, Philips (AndroidTV), Sony (AndroidTV) and Panasonic via the Videoload app for Smart TV. For Telekom customers with the EntertainTV or MagentaTV television packages, the Videoload content can also be accessed for a fee via the associated media receiver.

Videoload can be used on smartphones and tablets via the "MagentaTV App". In the app you can stream or download the content and play it without an internet connection.
