xine [ ksi: n ] is a free (under GNU General Public License ) media player for Linux , FreeBSD , Solaris , IRIX , and Mac OS X . We are working on supporting other platforms such as Windows , HP-UX , OpenBSD and OS / 2 .

The program is divided into a backend (xine-lib), which provides the audio and video functionality, and graphic frontends, which are used for interaction with the user. The following front ends are available:

  • xine-ui, the standard front end , uses Motif
  • gxine, uses GTK +
  • Kaffeine , based on KDE , can also use other backends;
  • Goggles Music Manager, written with FOX;
  • Oxines.
  • Phonon (initially on Unix-like systems (except Mac OS X) as the primary playback solution)

It supports all popular container formats such as AVI , Ogg / Ogg Media or MKV and many different video - and audio - codecs , many of them using the codec collection libavcodec which in FFmpeg is included. Data carriers such as DVDs or CDs can also be played. With libdvdcss , CSS-encrypted DVDs can also be played. Current versions also support digital television ( DVB ).
