IRIX was a commercial Unix - Operating system of the company Silicon Graphics (SGI) and is designed to operate MIPS -based systems from SGI designed. Due to its high scalability , it could be used on workstations as well as on supercomputers and thus created a basis for use in high performance computing (HPC) and for graphics calculations. The system comes from the System V family and is available in 32-bit and 64-bit versions.

The main applications included computer animation , medicine and research ( computed tomography , molecular chemistry , microscopy ), geology ( visualization of fossil raw material deposits , digital landscape models ) as well as military ( constructive simulation ) and computer-aided design (CAD).

features

From version 5.3, the journaling file system XFS is used under IRIX , previously the Extent File System (EFS) was used. IRIX uses 4dwm as the window manager . The IRIX licenses are always tied to the SGI computers, i. That is, when you buy a computer from SGI, you also get an IRIX license.

IRIX corresponds to the POSIX and UNIX 95 standards . The history of development and the naming of the versions are not entirely indisputable. The system appeared under the name IRIX for the first time shortly after the switch from Motorola's 68000 family to the MIPS architecture. The name IRIX is guaranteed for Release 3.1. The last version is 6.5.30 from August 16, 2006. The manufacturer SGI stopped the production of IRIX / MIPS on December 29, 2006; Support for existing customers was still available until the end of 2013. New (hardware) products from SGI are shipped with Red Hat Enterprise Linux or SUSE Linux Enterprise Server .
