Kaffeine (not: Caffeine ) is a free media player for Linux . The program was published under the GNU General Public License and can therefore be used and distributed free of charge. It uses the possibilities of the KDE user interface and therefore fits completely into this user environment with its operating concept and the so-called " look and feel ".
functionality
Kaffeine is a pure front end . This means that it does not have its own program functions for playing the video and music data. In the beginning, Kaffeine used the xine -lib or GStreamer instead . In the meantime, however, the program relies exclusively on libvlc .
Functions
Media types
Since the ability to play certain types of media does not depend on Kaffeine itself, this list goes back to the capabilities of libvlc, with the help of which Kaffeine can play the following types of media, among others:
- Audio CD / DVD video playback
- VCD / SVCD playback
- MP3 / Ogg - Vorbis
- DVB ( digital television )
- MPEG-1 / MPEG-2 / MPEG-4
- DivX / Xvid / QuickTime / RealMedia / Windows Media Audio and Video / Ogg Theora
- Matroska container
KDE integration
The additional features of Kaffeine are mainly limited to the integration in KDE:
- Full drag and drop support
- Parts list ( playlist )
- Local storage of a stream
- Subtitle support
- Dealing with DVD menus
- Network transmission ( broadcasting )
- Support for remote controls with LIRC
- bookmark
- Export of video excerpts as an image (snapshot / screenshot )
- Prevention of the screen saver
- Display of the current title in the on-screen display (OSD)
- Konqueror plug-in / Mozilla plug-in
- Equalizer
- Icon in the system bar ( Taskbar Notification Area )
- Full screen mode
- Minimal mode (hiding the GUI elements)
- Lots of translations
history
Kaffeine was and is developed by Jürgen Kofler and under the terms of open source - license GNU General Public License published (GPL). The program name is a play on words typical of KDE applications (an additional, or rather a “C” replacing, “K” in the name) with Caffeine , the English word for caffeine . Originally, instead of xine, GStreamer could also be used as a backend, but this option was removed from Kaffeine.
