LIRC is the abbreviation for Linux Infrared Remote Control . It is a program for Linux that can be used to convert commands from IR remote controls into program commands . All you need is an infrared receiver. There are different types of supported receivers, including USB receivers or those that are connected to the serial interface . Instructions for building a serial receiver are available on the project website. In addition to special receivers, receivers built into TV cards or sound cards are also supported.
In order to correctly decode the signals from remote controls, you need a configuration file that is matched to the respective remote control. You can either generate it yourself or download a suitable file from the Internet. Under KDE , KDELirc represents the connection between LIRC and the desktop.
The program offers the possibility to simulate a mouse with the lircmd daemon .
In addition to the Linux version of LIRC, there is a port for FreeBSD . There is also a Windows port called WinLIRC, which, however, is somewhat limited in terms of its functionality.
