The Google Assistant is an intelligent personal assistant from the US company Google for Android , Google Home , iOS and the Google Allo messenger that receives and processes both spoken and entered natural language. The software is the successor to Google Now .

history

Google Assistant was first on 18 May 2016, the Google developer conference Google I / O presented. In the German-speaking area, for the first time, the Google Assistant could only be accessed via the Google Allo messenger service, which was published on September 21, 2016, initially in English and later also in German. The “real” language assistant, which is to replace Google Now, was launched in the summer of 2017 in German. As a novelty, smart displays from the manufacturer Lenovo that have Google Assistant and voice control have also been available since July 2018 .

Functions

In contrast to its predecessor, Google Now, the Assistant gets to know the user in order to answer further questions based on the context of previous questions. On Google Pixel smartphones and from March 2, 2017 with Android 6.0 or newer (from 1.4 GB of RAM and 1280 × 720 pixels screen resolution), the Assistant can also change settings or answer questions related to the screen content, such as Google Now on Tap .

Speech recognition required a storage requirement of around 100 GB by 2019. Since most smartphones do not have enough memory for this, voice signals are sent via radio networks to Google servers for analysis and response. Starting with Pixel 4 smartphones, these programs only take up 0.5 GB to recognize commands locally in the device - even without an Internet connection. As a result, voice instructions are processed much faster than with manual input. Devices in 38 categories are controlled, including boilers, extractor hoods, showers, entrance doors, windows, shutters, garage doors, awnings, microwaves, pergolas, locks, security systems, doors, valves, curtains and kettles.

Third party providers

Since December 2016, Google has allowed third-party providers to integrate their products or services into the Google Assistant via the Dialogflow platform (previously API.ai ).

privacy

Thousands of employees in contracting companies write about 0.2% of all audio recordings made by the voice assistant and evaluate them - even without starting with the activation word “OK, Google”.
