Google Now was an in-house extension of the Google Search app by the US company Google LLC. It serves as an intelligent personal assistant for the Android and iOS operating systems . From February 2014, the extension could also be used as a developer version of the in-house browser Chrome . In February 2017, Google announced that Google Now Launcher would be discontinued and removed from the Play Store in the first quarter of the year. Google Now has been replaced by the Google Assistant .

history

Google Search offers speech recognition software for processing naturally spoken language . As a competing product to Apple's Siri and Samsung's S Voice, Google Search was first available in 2012 with Google Now in Android 4.1 "Jelly Bean" on the Galaxy Nexus .

On October 29, 2012, Google Now received an update from the Google Play Store that allows the addition of Gmail cards. Other additions were movie, concert, stock, and news cards based on the user's location and search history. Also included was the ability to create calendar events by voice, e.g. B. "Schedule a new dinner with Steve next Thursday at 7:00 PM".

On December 5, 2012, an update to the Google search application brought several new features to Google Now, including maps for nearby events, camera search when boarding passes are found by email in a museum or store (United Airlines first Line, more airlines followed). Additionally, Google Now would display maps of the weather for upcoming travel destinations, birthday reminders, and monthly summaries of cycling and hiking activities. New voice action features included in this update include the ability to post to Google+, song recognition features, and the ability to scan barcodes, but when the Search 2.5 update came out, Google removed the "search with camera" feature.

On March 21, 2013 it was announced that Google had sent an iOS version of Google Now to Apple, and on April 29, 2013 the app was also made available for iOS. On January 16, 2014, an alpha version of Google Now was first offered as a desktop version. On March 24, 2014, Google started rolling out Google Now for Google Chrome users who are logged into their Google account in their browser. Since July 2015 it has been possible to send WhatsApp messages to contacts using the Google Now voice assistant .

In September 2016 it was announced that Google would discontinue the Google Now service and integrate it into the Google Now Assistant.

Functions

The range of functions (called "maps") ranges from weather, traffic and other news to the automatic search of e-mails for important information, such as confirmations for tickets to events, and is constantly being expanded. For example, the user can use the "Sport" card to view the scores of his favorite teams during and after the game.

The big difference between Google Now and Siri, for example, is that the information appears depending on the situation: for example, the route to the relevant location before an appointment or its film program near a cinema.

With Android 6 "Marshmallow", the function Now on Tap was added, which reads out the information currently displayed on the screen and shows matching cards. For example, if you receive an e-mail with an offer to go to the cinema together, Now on Tap automatically displays maps of the nearest cinemas and information about current films.

Implementations

The Google Now app is implemented as standard in the Google Now Launcher, in February 2017 it was announced that Google would still plan in the first quarter of 2017 not to continue the Google Now Launcher, and from March 2017 manufacturers should also be prohibited from using the Launcher by default to install.

They want to replace the Google Now Launcher with the Google Search Launcher Services .

Demarcation

Google Search integrates different services, which is why it is difficult to differentiate between them. Colloquially , Google Search with integrated Google Now is simply referred to as “Google Now”.
