HTC Vive is a virtual reality headset produced by HTC in cooperation with Valve . It was unveiled by HTC on March 1, 2015, in the run-up to the Mobile World Congress . It's part of HTC's RE series and Valve's SteamVR project. The official market launch took place in April 2016 after a new generation of VR glasses had been presented at CES 2016 .

development

Valve has been working on basic research for virtual reality since 2012 and shared its findings with the manufacturer Oculus . In January 2014, Valve announced the SteamVR platform and demonstrated a prototype dubbed “Valve VR Room” that users could use to walk around the room. On February 23, 2015 Valve announced that it would show a SteamVR system at the planned Game Developers Conference . The Head-Mounted Display (HMD) was introduced by HTC on March 1, 2015 at the Mobile World Congress . The HTC Vive was also presented at the Quo Vadis Game Developer Conference in Berlin between April 21 and 23, 2015 . There was a public presentation with the opportunity for end customers to try it out at Gamescom in August 2015 in Cologne .

Lighthouse

Lighthouse is a tracking technology developed by Valve using class 1 infrared lasers . The base stations emit laser beams that are detected by photosensors on the headset and controllers. The computer can calculate the exact position and orientation of the device based on the time difference between the time the laser beams hit the respective sensors. The base stations only need power and do not have to communicate with the headset or computer. To enable error-free tracking in a field of 360 degrees, two base stations are included, which should ideally be placed in opposite corners of the room. This enables position detection in an area of around 4.5 m × 4.5 m. From this point of view, the HTC Vive with its Lighthouse system does better than its competitor Oculus Rift when it comes to tracking , as it comes with only one camera.

Specifications

The HTC Vive offers a resolution of 1080 × 1200 pixels per eye. The frame rate is 90 Hz. A gyro sensor, an accelerometer and a laser position meter are installed as sensors. The HTC Vive offers a 360-degree experience. Using two so-called “Steam VR base stations” - the Lighthouse system - the position of the user is determined in a room of a maximum of 25 square meters (5 m × 5 m). Interaction with virtual objects is made possible by means of special game controllers. The HTC Vive offers a USB 2.0, a USB 3.0, a headphone jack and an HDMI port.

Outsourcing

In June 2016, HTC Corporation explicitly confirmed that the VR department will be spun off into subsidiary HTC Vive Tech Corporation. HTC wants to set the goal of making strategic alliances more easily.
