Google Pay (formerly: Android Pay) is a mobile payment system from the US company Google for Android devices, in the USA also for iOS version 9.0 or higher.

development

Android Pay was announced by Sundar Pichai on March 2, 2015 as part of the Mobile World Congress and officially presented on May 28, 2015 in the course of Google I / O. The official start of the service was on September 10, 2015, but initially could only be used in the United States.

In the course of the developments, Google Inc took over the joint venture JVL Ventures, founded by the US mobile phone provider, and thus its mobile payment platform Softcard . Google's Wallet service , which originally offered the functionality of making cashless payments in shops, continues to exist with a new range of functions even after the introduction of Android Pay and has been renamed Google Pay Send . Inter-person payments (P2P payments) are currently offered in the US and UK.

The service works with all Android versions from Android 5.0 ( Lollipop ) and a built-in NFC chip. There are partnerships with large companies such as Pepsi , McDonald’s or Subway . At the start of the service, there were already over a million stores that can pay with Google Pay, and more stores and locations are to be added continuously. The option to pay within apps with Android Pay has been available since December 2015.

At the beginning of 2018, Google announced that the two services Android Pay and Google Wallet would be merged under the Google Pay brand in the future . The rollout of Google Pay started on February 20, 2018 .

At the beginning of 2019 it was announced that Google Pay had been recognized as an e-money institution in the EU.

function

The credit , debit , customer or gift card data must be stored once or the PayPal account must be linked. These are securely stored and are not transferred to the merchant during a transaction. Payments can be triggered by apps that have the Google Payment API integrated, including Groupon and Uber . These are processed without the additional entry of credit card details. It is also possible to use the “Tap and Pay” interface to make payments in shops using NFC . Google cooperates with payment service providers such as Mastercard or Visa .

In shops you can pay via existing NFC terminals if the stored card is accepted; The user then receives a transaction confirmation via notification on his device. In order to be able to pay with Google Pay within an app, there is the “Pay with Google” button, which can be used to make payments similar to the well-known PayPal Express payment system. In addition, there should be a loyalty system, for example at Coca-Cola machines.

safety

According to Google, the data is implemented using "tokens". The real credit card details are not exchanged with the corresponding payment terminal or the app. If the smartphone is lost, in order to prevent unauthorized payments, the user can delete the data on the device remotely using the "Android Device Manager" or assign a new password - this function is also available from Android without Google Pay supports. Google Pay has supported fingerprint scanners since Android 6.0 ( Marshmallow ) .

Since September 2018, the service can also be used in Germany with smartwatches with the Wear OS operating system .

On October 10, 2018, PayPal and Google announced that Google Pay can be used in retail outlets with a Debit Mastercard . PayPal debits the amounts via the deposited bank account.

At the end of November 2018, the Deutsche Kreditbank (DKB) announced that it would activate the Visa card for the use of Google Pay in spring 2019.

The savings banks and the Volksbanken announced that they will not make their cards available for Google Pay because they have launched their own apps. The 1822direkt , a direct bank subsidiary of the Frankfurter Sparkasse , wants to support Google Pay from "spring 2019".
