A smart watch ( English for "smart clock") is an electronic wrist watch ( " wearable "), the additional sensors , actuators features (eg., Vibration motor), and computer functionality and -konnektivitäten. An essential feature of smartwatches is that, in addition to the time, additional information can be displayed and the user can individually upgrade additional functions via programs (" apps "). In marketing , superwatches and activity trackers , which have different pre-installed programs but cannot be expanded by the user with additional programs, are sometimes misleadingly advertised as smartwatches.

history

After the cell phone watch , which since the 1930s by detective Dick Tracy , Knight Rider and others as fictional spy - Gadget was, since 1993 is also available as a real product on the market and with its own SIM card is operated, due to the synchronization with smartphones also the smartwatch. The basic function of smartwatches was to display information that the mobile phone / smartphone usually provides to the user, for example via incoming SMS or the name of the current caller. This should ensure that the smartphone does not have to be taken out of the pocket every time. The connectivity also made it possible to display weather information, Web 2.0 news, etc. By using new concepts such as For example, sensor fusion, the human-machine interface and new operating concepts have opened up numerous new areas of application.

Device history

  • At the Consumer Electronics Show ( CES ) in Las Vegas in 2003, Microsoft presented its SPOT watch (Smart Personal Objects Technology), which was able to visualize selected information from the Internet.
  • In 2008, Sony Ericsson presented the MBW-150 , which, in addition to displaying information, could also control cell phone music playback using Bluetooth.
  • The Chronos from Texas Instruments was launched on the German market in 2010 and featured the use of acceleration and air pressure sensors as a special feature.
  • The Meta Watch has been able to communicate with Android smartphones since 2011.
  • In the same year the Swiss emergency watch Limmex with a built-in cell phone was launched.
  • Sony SmartWatch with color display, Pebble with e-paper display, I'm Watch , WIMM One and inPulse from Verizon Wireless have been announced or available since 2012 . Furthermore, models from Casio and VEA are announced or available.
  • In June 2013 Sony announced the successor Smartwatch 2 (SW2).
  • The Samsung Gear series has been around since September 2013 .
  • Other project presentations in 2013 are Agent and Kreyos Meteor . The latter is the first smartwatch model to date to feature gesture recognition and voice control .
  • With Android Wear , Google introduced a smartwatch platform that, coupled with an Android smartphone, automatically displays relevant information and offers deep integration of Google voice search. The first devices are the LG G Watch and the Samsung Gear Live .
  • At the beginning of 2014 Motorola announced the Moto 360, the first round smartwatch. The watch was launched in November 2014 together with the LG G Watch R.
  • On September 9, 2014, Apple introduced the Apple Watch . It appears in three versions, the Apple Watch, Apple Watch Sport and Apple Watch Edition.
  • In February 2015, three traditional Swiss watch manufacturers announced their own smartwatches. The two manufacturers Mondaine (with the Helvetica 1 Smartwatch model ), Zurich, and Frédérique Constant, Geneva, combine a traditional quartz wristwatch and analog pointer display with additional fitness and alarm functions, which are only useful with a smartphone or tablet computer . Such solutions have a limited range of functions, but are much more energy efficient than smartwatches with an electronic digital display and backlight . The Frédérique Constant watch has a battery life of over two years. The Swatch Touch Zero One has a curved screen with a touchscreen and integrated fitness functions . Versions with an integrated payment function and / or for operating electronic door locks are to follow later. Standardized wireless transmission of the Near Field Communication (NFC) type is used.

description

Apple Watch

Smartwatches are the size of wristwatches, but they can show additional information, for example on the display, inform the user, for example with a vibration alarm, and record the current situation via the sensors. In this way, the consumer can be observed and given situation-specific support, as well as executing commands through interactions in order to control other devices. Usually, smartwatches can connect wirelessly via Bluetooth to a smartphone with a suitable mobile app and exchange data bidirectionally, as this is the only way to utilize the full functionality of today's devices. Smartwatches are usually equipped with rechargeable batteries that need to be charged regularly.

Samsung Galaxy Watch

The smartwatches mostly use proprietary operating systems (e.g. WatchOS from Apple) or Android . In March 2014, Google announced its own Android version for smartwatches and similar devices called Android Wear .

The operating time of a smartwatch without recharging is severely limited by the type of display, the electronics complexity and the connectivity. Manufacturer specifications indicate running times of one day ( Apple Watch ) up to a few days, in special cases with limited functionality even up to two years.

In a test by Stiftung Warentest (October 2015), none of the twelve devices tested was rated as good in the price range up to 700 euros. In addition to the data transmission behavior , the cumbersome handling and the short battery life were also criticized . In December 2019, the conclusion was "less smart than promised", but this time two of the thirteen smartwatches tested received the test rating "good".

application areas

Smartwatches are typical products for private users, but can also be used in industrial environments. The areas of application are diverse, but can be roughly divided into sports, health and advanced smartphone functions.

Sports

Smartwatches are also increasingly used as sports watches. Thanks to the integrated technology, heart rate and pulse can be measured and movements recorded. With the help of this data it is possible to make a person's training more efficient and to determine an individual training and pulse range.

health

The sensor system enables the detection of anomalies, which allows for use in older people (fall detection, assistance, epilepsy), in endangered workplaces or medical applications. Smartwatches are also used to detect cardiac arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation. Since 2019 there has also been a model that can measure blood pressure.

Extended smartphone functions

Classic applications are also time information by reading the time aloud, reminder functions, time recording, notifications or activity recognition. Further applications are the simplified time and alarm setting of the clock from the corresponding smartphone, a signal to find a misplaced cell phone or the release of a collection of sensitive data (passwords, etc.).

Other applications include making calls, receiving and replying to e-mails, and starting video recordings and photos on connected cameras. Smartwatches can contain a SIM card and can therefore be used for certain functions independently of the smartphone: e.g. B. send an emergency call, the watches can be located for faster assistance by rescue workers. When receiving e-mails, please note that there may be problems because the password required for this is stored in the device.

Forecasts for sales and turnover in Germany

In September 2015, the digital association Bitkom published forecasts for the German market, according to which smartwatches are expected to generate total sales of EUR 169.2 million for 2015 as a whole. The sales figure is estimated at around 645,000 devices. According to Bitkom, the average price for a smartwatch in 2015 is 262 euros.

Sales figures worldwide

The sale of smartwatches is increasing worldwide. At the beginning of February 2018, it was announced that Apple had sold a good 18 million copies of the Apple Watch last year. So Apple has left the entire Swiss watch industry behind.

privacy

At the beginning of December 2016, the data protection authorities of several German federal states as well as the German Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information found that none of the 16 tested wearables had met the data protection regulations.
