Skagen Designs is a Danish - American company that makes designer watches , jewelry and sunglasses . The company was founded in 1989. In addition to the headquarters in Reno , Nevada , USA , there are other company headquarters in Albertslund Municipality near Copenhagen in Denmark and Hong Kong .
The company was founded by Henrik and Charlotte Jorst, a Danish couple who moved to New York in 1986 for professional reasons , when Henrik Jorst became US sales manager at the Danish brewery Carlsberg . In 1989 the couple founded their own company and initially sold products from various Danish watch manufacturers, including watches by the famous designer Jacob Jensen , who is best known for his work for Bang & Olufsen .
In the early 1990s, the company began manufacturing its own watches. After the presentation of various models at the New York Premium and Incentive Show in spring 1991, the Jorsts first sold the watches under the name Skagen Denmark , named after the northern Danish fishing and holiday resort of Skagen . The logo refers to the meeting of the waves from the North Sea and the Baltic Sea on the town's coast. In the years that followed, sales soared. In 1998 the first branches were opened in Denmark . A year later, sales began in the UK and Germany . After the European market had been opened up, sales began in Asia and Australia . Skagen Designs has since grown into a global company.
In mid-January 2012, the American company Fossil (which specializes in the design, production, marketing and distribution of fashion accessories) announced that it was taking over Skagen and some of its subsidiaries for around 225 million US dollars (around 175 million euros) will. In return, Skagen will receive 150,000 Fossil shares of the share capital.
