Wear OS ( called Android Wear until March 16, 2018 ) is an operating system from the US company Google LLC . It was derived from the in-house operating system Android and developed for smartwatches and other " wearables ". It was first presented on March 18, 2014. According to the manufacturer, it offers Google Now functions in the case of a wristwatch.
Market position
The market leaders in 2019 were Apple with a 35.8% market share ahead of Samsung with 11.1% as well as Imoo, Fitbit , Amazfit and Huawei. Fossil followed in seventh place with a 2.5% market share, a first provider with Wear OS by Google.
hardware
Most of the first models were powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, which was underclocked by software. This was replaced in 2016 by Snapdragon Wear 2100, which was specially developed by Qualcomm for wearable applications and is used in most of the devices released up to 2017. In addition to the Qualcomm processors, processors from Texas Instruments ( Moto 360 ), Broadcom ( Sony Smartwatch 3 ) as well as from Intel ( Fossil and TAG Heuer ) and MediaTek (Ticwatch, Polar) were used in Android Wear Smartwatches. All devices released up to 2017 have 4 GB of flash memory for storing data, almost all of which have 512 MB of main memory . Watches with LTE connectivity usually have 768 MB of RAM. In terms of display technology and shape, in addition to the completely round AMOLED displays that were widespread from 2017, there were also round and square displays (including LG Watch, Asus ZenWatch 1 + 2, Polar 600) with e.g. T. TFT-LCD technology. Also, especially in the first few years, round displays with a so-called flat tire, i.e. a flat cutout at the bottom of the display, were used. This cutout was used to accommodate the light sensor.
The Android Wear platform supports many wireless standards and sensors, including acceleration and inclination sensors for motion control, as well as sensors for measuring air pressure and heart rate sensors. The connection with the smartphone is made with Bluetooth technology, sometimes also with a WLAN and cellular network. Such devices can also be used without a smartphone to z. B. Telephoning can be used. Some models support GPS and NFC technology.
A capacitive touchscreen is usually used for input, some models also have buttons, a touch-sensitive bezel or a rotating crown.
Initially, smartphone manufacturers such as LG, Huawei, Sony, Asus and Motorola offered devices with Android Wear. Since 2016, however, many models have come from watch manufacturers (Tag Heuer, Movado) and fashion brands (Diesel, Hilfiger).
Since at least 2017, Fossil has become the main manufacturer of Wear OS watches. Most of the new models released since then come from Fossil or are manufactured by Fossil for various fashion brands (Michael Kors, Diesel, and others).
service
A Smartwatch with Wear OS requires an Android device version 4.3 or higher, coupled via Bluetooth , WLAN or cellular network , for configuration and use . If the "pairing" was successful, notifications from the cell phone are also displayed and synchronized on the smartwatch - if you delete a message, this also happens on the other device. You can also set that the control unit's lock is canceled as soon as the previously paired clock is within range. The Android Wear System is designed to be used directly with a SIM card, but the decision to implement this feature lies with the manufacturer.
The advanced configuration takes place via the official Android Wear app. In Android Wear 1.5 there are no independent Wear apps and therefore no app market for them, but developers can optimize their normal Android apps for the smartwatch system. However, there is a Wear section in the Google Play Store for such apps. However, there are also apps that are exclusively for smartwatches with this operating system, e.g. B. an app launcher with additional quick settings. From Android Wear 2.0, the Google Play Store is available on the smartwatch itself. From AW 2.0 onwards, apps must therefore also be installed directly via the watch, an existing Google account can now also be transferred from the smartphone when the watch is set up for the first time, or a Google account must be set up to use the Play Store.
Since the display of the Smartwatch is quite small, the operation is mainly based on swipe gestures and voice control. The standard screen consists of a so-called watch face, or dial, which can display a lot of other information in addition to the time and date. You can navigate through menus and apps by swiping or gesturing, as well as by pressing buttons (depending on the model), touch-sensitive areas of the bezel or a rotatable crown . Swipe and movement gestures differ z. T. in Android Wear 1.5 and 2.0
The “Ok Google” hotword recognition for fast Internet searches , which is already known from Google Now, is also built in as standard. The device reacts to these words even when the screen is switched off. A virtual keyboard was dispensed with in favor of voice input in Android Wear 1.5. As of Android Wear 2.0, a keyboard and handwriting recognition are also offered as input methods as standard in addition to voice input.

Open Handset Alliance, accessed on September 9, 2012 : “ The preferred license for the Android Open Source Project is the Apache Software License, 2.0. ... Why Apache Software License? ... For userspace (that is, non-kernel) software, we do in fact prefer ASL2.0 (and similar licenses like BSD, MIT, etc.) over other licenses such as LGPL. Android is about freedom and choice. The purpose of Android is to promote openness in the mobile world, but we don't believe it's possible to predict or dictate all the uses to which people will want to put our software. So, while we encourage everyone to make devices that are open and modifiable, we don't believe it is our place to force them to do so. Using LGPL libraries would often force them to do so. "
